Devv's Dirt Grow-Almost done..

Weekend March 2-3:
I’ve been working on the garden for years; it was dormant for a few years (like 10) while I changed careers. The base soil if you want to call it that is sand. I added heavy black dirt to the upper 2/3 years ago; I’ve since added heavy red dirt (clay ) to half of the lower 1/3. For two years straight I’ve added 4”s of compost to the upper 2/3 and this year 4”s to the bottom 1/3. I clean horse pens for the free manure; kitchen waste is added to the compost. Our property is on a slope and heavy rains cause erosion problems. Above the garden the land is heavily terraced to divert water runoff.
Finished concreting the base of the fence, used 22 80lb bags, the Waskily Wabbits should be done, until they find another way in. They have been a real menace! I tried a hot wire system, it was not too effective and killed birds and squirrels; I didn’t like that.

Planted the Onions January 15th, Garlic was planted September 15th. They took a beating with the 30mph winds, 55 mph gusts last Monday.

Tilled and my wife planted corn, cukes, watermelons, bush beans and cantelope.

I started these the first week of January; I think I got carried away.

The Potatoes, planted February 15th are coming up. I planted then 8”s deep and I keep covering them up, and will do so until the ground is level where planted.

Dinner's served....

I absolutely love ribs, mnmmmmmm!

The turkey jerky looks really good too. I've never tried jerky made out of turkey meat before, and I probably would not have thought of doing it that way. How is the flavour?

The ribs recipe is here: http://www.devtex.net/recipe.htm

The turkey jerky is a seasoning I buy in Castroville, Tx. excellent! We soak it in the brine overnight and then cook it in the smoker at 150 degrees until the turkey is dry looking. Then we smoke with Mesquite for 2 hours and when the meats @ 150 degrees we pull it in...we heavily pepper it with ground peppercorns, and of course it's great or we wouldn't make it all the time :D

Dayum Scott, that's some nice looking snausage ya got there! I bet you'd make some killer chorizo or jerky too! Carry on...

LOL on the snausage, my sis-inlaw got a little snockered many moons ago and said "don't forget the snausage" we still use that pronunciation. I've been making sausage and jerky for 20 years or so, salami's ect.

Just another hobby:)

So I'm still playing with this camera,

Yet another pod damaged by what I think are grasshoppers, look at the top left piece. The pod smelled like juicy fruit gum, so says the wife..definitely a fruity fragrance...So I wiped my finger on the placenta, very oily, and licked my finger. Instant hiccups...LOL did a bout 5 or 6, and it was hot! But not so hot that I won't taste one that's not been bug drilled,

I'm seeing more and more starting to turn.

I almost gave up and yanked this Thai, It really looked bad and I wasn't sure if it was mites or a virus. Sure looks like it's head's on straight now and flowers are loading up.

Yesterdays haul, I'm ready for some Chinense to ripen!

Nons

Pulled up all the red onions, nothing but peppers in the garden now.  Disappointed in the sizes, I'm blaming the seed, the whites looked really good..all I could find was the dried seed, not the green cut shoots. I've started them from seed before...but had too much going on.

The JA's got new shoes...they were in these pots only 2 or 3 weeks.

Bumpy?

Plants look stellar, pod porn is awesome and I’m happy you’re giving the girls new shoes. I find mine jump up very nice when they’re just at the stage yours are at with new shoes. Great harvest, keep it up \o/

Bumpity-bump.

Nice harvest shots, looks like things are going strong! When you say you have nothing but peppers in the garden does that mean you don't grow garlic? I highly recommend it for all pepper lovers, because there is no comparison between store bought and home grown garlic.

Maybe lack of water, or it could just be the variety of red Onions you grew. I always get bigger bulbs when I grow from seed and make sure they get enough water until the tops die.

The pods you posted pics of show that you've surely got it going brother! Keep up the good work!

I'm jealous.........the 1st four glogs I 've checked out so far today, folks are all dehydrating........already           :woohoo:
Scott the pod shots, garden photos and the curing process is all ....way too cool !
Great update !

They had an explosion of growth after the last new shoes and all the rain, they should be good for awhile now..

My red onions did the same last season. Looked more like leek. I let a few smaller ones go thru winter and still looked just like those.
Bunk seeds?

That's what I'm thinking, couldn't find any where I normally get them and bought these died out bulbs. They greened real fast but never set good bulbs. The whites did fine.

I planted Garlic at the fall eqinox and pulled it about 2 weeks ago. I planted Elephant and store bought cloves. The store bought stuff did great, the Elephant garlic was under sized, maybe it's too hot here..

I'm really glad to see things are finally coming together for the supers, such a long wait!

I've been growing onions for some time, this is the first time I've seen that. The whites were planted in with these around Jan 15th and the white tops fell over around a month or so again. These the top never fell over but I can tell they're not going to do much more. The forecast this week is for highs of 98, summers here!

Great looking grow!

Going back to our last conversation, I would avoid store bought garlics. A lot of very good garlic can be found online, and you definitely would notice the difference in the end. If you want I can send you some of mine to get you started.
