Dog or Cat?

Hey gang, I'm thinking about getting a Dog or a Cat, but I can't make my mind up.

I have the same question going on in a different forum but it died out a long time ago, and I'm still thinking.

Can everyone who has cat's list the pros and cons?

Can everyone list pros and cons if they own a dogs?

I'm a bit biased. I'm deathly allergic to both (save for about four species of dogs that have hair instead of fur). Cats are evil IMHO, they are tempermental, prissy, high maintenance, hack up hair balls, and claw your place to hell, and are not very trainable. I'm so allergic to cats that I can't even touch them (seriously, my hand breaks out into a rash and I itch my skin off) and usually if I stay in a heavyly cat infested place I'm dead withing 24 hours.

Dogs will love you unconstitutionally, wait for you to come home, very trainable, and really are "man's best friend"....I'm less allegic to dogs and can actually touch them. Although if I'm in a heavly dog infested place I'm dead withing 48 hours.

Get a dog, but go to a reputable breader that has credentials and spend money for a HEALTHY, non inbread, stable breed. It'll save you alot of heart ache and a ton of money in the long run.

Your right about that Iggy, I'm still thinking dog, Dog can be mans best friend & and a loyal companion.

I just don't want one those accessorize type dog that woman seem to love, "No offense Pam". That would be the Little 5 pound rat looking dogs.

I am very anti cat, so i'm probably not the best person to ask....

I have grown up with dogs around me all my life and I love them...

But if you are in a small living space then It might be better to have a cat.

Dogs are 'a mans best friend' but in saying that, they rely on you alot more than a cat will. So if you are rarely home or you aren't home for periods over 8 hours a lot then it's probably a bit unkind to have a dog as they like company....

Where as a cat doesn't really give a rats ass if you are home or not as long as it gets feed.....I know Tx will argue that point.......

Actually I would get Tx's advice about cats....He loves his cat and he is in a small living space from memory...

All just My opinion mate.....

Hope it works out...

My vote is for a Dog as well. While cats are much more independent and take less training I did not experience the same connection with the one cat I had. Clearly one cat is not a large sample, but some of my friends have cats as well. Dogs are more work though. The degree of work depends on what type of dog you decide to purchase. For example, if you purchase a 5 pound dog it is easier to provide them with adequate exercise. Some breeds are more independant than others. Some dogs are bred to be energetic working dogs etc. Besides exercise there is also grooming. Cats clean themselves. If you don't want your hand to stink when you pet your dog then you are going to have to bathe your dog. If it is a non-shedding dog then haircuts are also a necessity. If you do decide on a dog, size is a big consideration. Obviously a larger dog eats more. A larger dog also has larger poop, needs larger spaces to move around etc. Some breeds are more easily trained than others. Sorry I feel like I am just randomly jumping around to thoughts. I guess my point is that if you decide on a dog do a lot of research. If you have never trained or owned a dog before I would suggest possibly adopting a dog about 2 years old that is already trained and has formed a personality.

Thank you gang, I'm still wavering on a dog any hoo, I can take him camping, fishing so on, Cat's can't swim and doesn't like the water.

I can't swim but I like the water.

99% of the dogs my family has had since I was a boy have been from the pound or runaways.

Don't reject the pound (homeless animal shelters) as a good place to start.....All of the dogs we have got from the pound have been the most loving and loyal animals....and you are saving a life at the same time....

Same thing could be said for cats as well...

Actually that's where I'm going to look Saturday, They have one dog I'm interested in and I get to interact with him Saturday. However the dog is a poodle mix, but doesn't look like your typical poodle.

Yea all my dogs have been from shelters as well. The one cat I had was a cat we took in. For the most part, until the last year and a half of her life, she was an outside cat. She would come and go as she pleased. The great thing about that was no litter box.

That site is a pretty good resource. Basically a database of animals from shelters all over. The great part is that you can put in your zip, select the dog option, and see the dogs in your area. Helps narrow things down without actually having to take trips all over the place.

I find that dog is really tough and chewy, while the cat makes a great stew, the meat just falls apart...mmmm. Goes great with a nice Dr Pepper Sauce aswell.

I have had 6 dogs in my life and one cat. Cats are interesting creatures, but not too interactive unless THEY feel like it. All the dogs I have had have had amazing personalities. They really do become part of the family. I say this with a heavy heart as I just lost my dog to cancer this week...

I currently have 7 cats and 1 dog. But have had more in the past, of each. I'm not voting because I could never choose. The pros are too many to list for either.

Cats: If you'd prefer an easier to care for animal, one that's more independent, go with a cat. Handle frequently when young.
Cons: Shedding, Cleaning the litter box.

Dogs: More dependent and loyal than cats, requires more attention & training.
Cons: Shedding, Poop-duty. (Taking them out, walking them, picking up the poop. For smaller dogs, picking up the poop off of newspapers.

Hmm... my cons have something in common. The only thing I don't like about having pets.
Spay or neuter to prevent spraying & marking.
