Earth Hour -Who's in?

DevilDuck said:
I drive a 25 year old car that goes like a bat out of hell and still gets 27 mpg...and it's paid for.

I smoke cigarettes, drink beer, and enjoy a/c. In the winter, as long as I'm warm, I don't really care where the heat is coming from.

I wash my car and water my lawn in the summer, and my wife drives a big SUV. I play drums and use wood sticks, wood drums (with mylar drum heads), and a brass/nickel/copper cymbals.

I removed the water restrictor in my low-flow shower head so I can have a little pressure and not spend an eternity trying to get the shampoo out of my hair and soap off my body.

I use paper towels and newspaper to clean glass with high ammonia cleaner. I don't really care where my clothes come from as long as they fit and I don't look ridiculous.

I make hot sauce using electricity and bottle it in glass bottles with paper labels and plastic shrink bands for your safety.

I grill with charcoal, and smoke meats using propane and wood chips.

My trash bags are made of plastic as well as most of my computer and other electronic gadgets.

If I leave the house in the evening, I let a few lights on so would be criminals think twice before breaking in and stealing everything I worked so hard for.

I suppose I could use a straight razor to shave, but that's a hassle, so I use disposable blades

Just read your response DD and I'm tellin' ya'...this is the deepest response I have seen to date...

Ethanol is a joke. It requires so much acreage just to fill up one SUV tank, not to mention that it take a gallon of fuel to grow one gallons worth of ethanol.

I am all fo r alternative fuel, but this was just a fad that people latched onto just to say they were doing something.

Here's the thing. Like I've said before, I drive a 25 year old car. Damn thing runs like a champ, ask Passow (IGG). However, from November to February, New Mexico puts 15% Ethanol into the gasoline mixture. I have to replace my fuel filter and adjust my air/fuel ratio in November and back again in February in order for my car to run correctly.

During the winter months when Ethanol is part of the mix, my fuel injectors get all gunked up and my overall gas mileage goes down 5mpg.

So... Some people say that I need to buy a new car. Why? First of all, my car is a classic (Datsun 280ZX). 2nd, it's paid for. 3rd, there isn't a car out there that I would fork over $375 a month plus full coverage insurance. Besides, I have a 13 year old truck that's also paid for! Wait a minute... My wife's SUV is also paid for!

......and another thing....

All of this 'green' stuff goes far deeper that trying to save the planet. If the planet is in any kind of danger, it'll shake us off like a bunch of fleas and renew itself. We don't have much to say about it.

The shift toward ethanol isn't so much about being green as much as it is towards self-sufficecy.

well that can never happen until our refineries are changed &/or our method of harvesting/transporting that ethanol/corn.
the only reason why ethanol is cheaper than gasoline/diesel is because of our govt subsidizing the whole ethanol industry, plain & simple!!

otherwise ethanol would cost more than gasoline/diesel.

its one of those things that make environmentalists feel good about themselves thinking they're doing good  while everyone pays for them to feel good about themselves, which they also pay for their good deed in the form of taxes to support the ethanol scam.

well since corn is getting subsidized by our govt, many farmers are growing corn to cash in & are not enrolling in the CRP program (helps wildlfe & environment by some even planting trees on those tracts of land)

instead they till those fields over & plant crops, or to a extreme rip out the wooded areas trees/shrubs/everything & make it into plantable field - my uncle did this to some of his land & I mean mature woods! that are homes to all forms of wildlife in a prairie/crop field area which mature woods are hard to come by because most times they only exsist when theres a home there (homestead with trees for a shelter break)

then your energy efficient bulbs (CFL's) contain small ammounts of mercury, get enough mercury into the waterways or into your body its NOT good! but you never had to worry about that with the normal cheap lightbulbs.

or the simple fact people dont want any new oil drilling because it'll be harmful to the environment at that location, but those same people dont have a problem with the urban sprawl issue or the impact they have on their own environment at their location  cities kill more wildlife than any other type of actions

what about those hybrid vehicles ! you get in a accident what are we supposed to call in a Haz-mat unit for every accident involving a hybrid vehicle ? with more batterys in the vehicle it runs the risk of more battery acid leaking into the ground water. or what about the chemical burns from the battery acid in a accident ?

the way I see it its just a trade off, you switch 1 evil for another evil.

what I don't understand about the hybrid cars is they don't really get that good of gas or fuel milage IMO....there is a design and engineering company that has been around for years and is advertising they have designed a car that will achieve 245 mpg. They won't be building it but will sell the plans to build your own...I just hate the fact that the fuel prices are literally just skyrocketting out of control. As for the turn off the juice for an hour....my wife works all day as do I and the lights will already be off....LOL....

my 79 blazer which I sold(but kept the motor and tranny),,,a hog on gas every tank is hi test with 2 bottles of octane boost to make it run right..poloution controll???whats that??my 86 jimmy duels no cat,,,my buick...no cat(no cat inproves performance and gas milage) my plymouth breeze has the cat off of my jimmy because of that blasted emmission testing which to me doesnt make any sence...a desel vehicle..there is no real test and they pollute more than gas..why is there no test???think transports..To me its another oppertunity for the government to make money like the GST ..which wasnt supposed to stay..Im not trying to make things political just saying my thing

my buddy was paranoid his desil truck was going to fail emmissions..I laughed at him told him not to worry..he went in they didnt even pull his truck in the garage...just signed the paperwork and he was off..to me thats a bit on the pathetic side.So to me if anyone thinks I polute by driving an older car think that the next time you see a transport drive by you on the highway..Another thought just occured so I am adding on...who here owns a lawnmower, snowblower oh yeah of course a tiller..id say alot here have at least one of those...who here is going to drop their lawnmower tiller snowblower because it might hurt the enviroment.....im not...ill leave it at that

what I don't understand about the hybrid cars

theres nothing to understand other than the word "scam" when it comes to the hybrid/ethanol issue. they're there to make environmentalists feel good about themselves for their little good deed. but they dont relize the negative aspect of each issue or their own different impact on earth they have. they just have a narrow vision of whats good.

canuk - me too  I've drilled through my catalytic converters on several vehicles, but I kept them on for noise reasons but gutted. another thing those are worth some $$$ people here cut them right off your vehicle.

if you really want to be environmental friendly you'd just buy one of those old school lawn mowers - just blades & your own sweat to work the lawn mower. it has the least impact on the environment!

I have a cat off of my old fifth avenue which a local bud that works at a local boneyard wants to give me 30..ish for...the exhaust is galvonized hes not intrested in that just the cat...go figure

Cats have a platinum and copper (I think) mesh or grid inside. That's why!

Even though copper theft is the "cool" crime now-a-days, platinum, rhodium, and palladium (as well as other rare transition metals) are worth hundreds to thousands times copper. Platinum sells at over $2000 an ounce on the market.

Locally, the early adopters and trend setters are going for catalytic converter theft over air conditioner condenser theft and abandoned house copper pipe theft as the the new cool.
