JCW's 2015 Glog

Well, here's to another year. I wanted to downsize from last year, and ended up practically doubling everything.  Started germinating on Jan 22 using paper towel method.  Tried 2 ways, one in cups with the seeds on top, other the way I have always done with the seeds in paper towel in ziploc.  Both have worked, but the paper towel in ziploc seems faster, maybe better temp control there.  So far have about 55 seeds in dirt after 11 days with many of them already popped up and looking happy.

Almost an embarrassing setup compared to many I see on here, but it worked great 10 years ago, and still worked fine last year so I figure no need to change yet.

Will need another rack of lights this year for the increase in volume I have.

Grow list as of today (updated 3/17 hopefully for the last time).  I tried to keep track of the sources, so hopefully I have given proper credit here.

Nice setup. Does that plastic completely shut down the weeds?
Yes, its very thorough with the weeds.  I started using plastic over 10 years ago when my main focus was tomatoes.  Worked so well use it all the time now for much of the garden, just not in the smaller raised beds, still have to weed those.  The plastic is also very good at keeping everything from drying out.  Unless we have a sever drought, I will not water anything this year.  Only the initial watering when I planted last year, nothing again.  Its almost too good though, last year was very wet and one end of the garden suffered from too much moisture.  Lots of leaf curl and not setting pods.  Ripped plastic off of that part and things got much better.

Nice and clean!

Thanks for the nice words everyone.  Back is fine now, ususally doesn't last.  Suffered about 250ish bites on my legs from buffalo gnats today on a golf course, so my legs are killing me.  Never have seen them this bad and all of us forgot bug spray.

The garden was attacked Friday night and last night by raccoons or something though, no permanent damage but they made a mess of a few plants.  Posting some pictures of that in a little bit.

Gnats are freaking horrible this year! Glad your backs doing better

So I get home Saturday late morning and go to check things, expect some digging from squirrels as I always do and sure enough find some.  Fill in the holes and go to other side of yard to the raised beds and realized I have much bigger issues than squirrels.  I found stuffing scotch bonnet laying on top of the ground and its hole complete dug out.  Then found several more plants laying on top of the ground, some were just planted Friday, some where planted a week ago.  Found my biggest large orange thai ripped out.  Luckily all plants somehow seemed to suffer no damage almost as if the critters took care not to harm them. A chinese giant bell pepper did look to have about half of its root ball torn off, but otherwise all are replanted and seem ok.  Was out last night didn't get home till about 1am and when pulling in there was a coon in the front yard, but was gone by the time I could get out there.  Did pour a bunch of cayenne around the 2 plants that were dug up saturday night also, they got hit both nights.  Not sure if that works, its raining now so might get all washed away.  If it doesn't might sacrifice a little reaper powder since will be making more soon anyway to see if that deters them.  If it works might have to make a ton of extra powder this year just for this.  Hope to have a fence someday soon also, but they can climb about anything so not sure it would help much.

Well, that sucks.  Did you use fish emulsion or anything like that in the holes when you transplanted?  I've quit using that sort of thing entirely after many experiences like yours.

I have 10 pounds of dried supers to be powdered for just this application.

No fish emulsion, but did use some Jobes granular organic fertilizer in the holes when planting.  It does have a smell that might be a little fishy.  Probably what they are after.   Funny how some had been out for quite some time and others just planted that day.  I have an abundance of cayenne so did drop some of that around the 2 that had been pulled consecutive nights.  Looked like he came back last night, dug a tiny hole then probably got a taste or nose full.  If I have to I may break out some superhot powder, but lower supply of that.  I had already though of doing what you mentioned above.  This year rather than give away so many, I will just freeze if i need to until I can get them dried and have a stash set aside just for this next spring.

Not the "stuffing SB" of all your peppers looking forward to this variety Justin ... I suppose they are like the British Fox more of a nuisance than anything else ... just digging for food ... Are you allowed to shoot them in your State

Only during hunting season I believe.    With a nuisance permit they can be live trapped, but I have no interest in dealing with that.  I don't have time in the mornings  before work to haul it away.  And the noise it would make trapped in a live trap all day would bring too much attention that I don't want.  I spread a lot more cayenne and powdered white bhut today, they haven't  touched anything I peppered the other day.

But I do have this next to the window.  In town so can't use a real rifle, but this won't feel good.

Last nights damage.  Only some pots that I had filled to plant tonight.  Nothing was in them yet.  I don't think I had any fertilizer in this mix.  It must be the bone meal or manure they are after, can't think of anything else, and surprised that would get them that excited.  Only thing else in there was peat, top soil, perlite,  limestone and gypsum.

Bastards! Looks like it lives close and this harassment is only going to get worse. Kill the little turd. Only solution, wifey had some get into her attic two years ago, they get zero tolerance round here. Had one show up in my back yard a few months ago, dogs went nuts and it seemed zero concerned with us... until I beat his ass with a 2x4 like a cricket bat and launched him off the fence into the neighbors above ground pool. (still had cover on it, hope he jacked it up... hate that asshole)  Hasn't set foot in my yard again.

I will be if I can see them.  I look out every 10 minutes until I go to bed,   Probably coming in the middle of the night.   Definitely going to keep a bunch of spare superhots dried or frozen or powdered next year to put around the plants.  I have been here 8 years and while never as big a grow as this never have had a problem like this.  Cannot leave garbage outside but hopefully this is just one individual that I can take care of.  Being that there is a 500 or so acre section of woods that touches the back corner of my property, theres never an end to the wildlife, just need to get these guys to stop.  If I have to will go buy some bulk cayenne or something and dust everywhere.

I didn't give 2 shits about me or the dogs barking at it, it was just casually strolling about like it owned my damn yard. Just gave me a look of indifference as I strolled up to it. Hopped onto my fence to get away from dogs (was more worried about it tearing them up but they flew out the door on me) I snatched up a 2x4 that was leaning next to sliding door and made noise trying to scare it. Then it got the wack,

I wish rabbits would let me get that close... fcking bastages. Seems like they have given up trying to get into my yard lately. Haven't seen any back there. But i'm still vigilant.

Not much new going on, kinda a slow time I guess.  Starting to get quite a few putting on some pods.  Most seem OK, a few might be a little sick but hopfully nothing serious, pulled off bad looking leaves, hoping they grow out of it, but if its viral or something probably won't help.

My biggest plant so far a Chocolate BG7.

2 Capuchino Habs.  Looked sick so didn't want to plant them with the rest.  Looking better now, but still keeping them in isolation.

Never had my broccoli, cabbage, and cauli grow this big this fast.  Maybe shouldn't fertilize next year.  Gave them the same stuff as the peppers, normally I just throw them in the dirt.

Main patch doing ok, if they don't drown tonight in the 3 - 4 inches of rain we just got today.  Shouldn't have to water the rest of the year unless theres a drought.  150+ planted over here.

Purple jalapeno looking good.  Had a half broken stem a few weeks before planting, seems to have healed up well.

The enemy has eyes everywhere.  They were keeping eyes on me at the golf course this weekend.

(still had cover on it, hope he jacked it up... hate that asshole)  Hasn't set foot in my yard again.
lmao ! now thats some funny sh!t !

Finally getting some pods.
