MeatHead 2014

Thought I'd start a new glog as my 1st year grow plants have now gone, and all remaining plants are intended for the 2014 season. Currently have growing with hopes of keeping through winter-
Yellow bhut jolokia
Brain strain
Aji limon
Chocolate Trinidad scorpion
Fatalii
Black Hungarian
Chinese 5 colour.
Have all healthy plants bar 1 out of 6 inch pots and in either permanent or semi permanent homes. Due to messing up the labels I'm not sure which is which on the Chinense varieties. Have 1 seedling that was seriously struggling, but it's starting to throw out new leaves so there's hope for it yet. Hoping we either have a mild Winter here, or I can get some lights set up in our spare bedroom to get them through until Spring. Have a few more varieties I have yet to plant, but thinking I may wait til the end of January to start those seeds.

Anyway, enough babbling. On to some pics!
Green pot is an Aji Limon, bag TBD Chinense, Venus fly trap and pitcher plant on the cooler in the back, cayenne I'm trying to decide whether to OW or not in the red pot and some cilantro in the cup

Another couple of TBD Chinense's and the struggling seedling that's popping back (over watering was the cause I think)

Chinese 5 colour and 2 more Chinense's

Thanks Jesse. The tomatoes along with the peppers I have started won't go out until I'm sure the cold weather is gone for good, which hopefully if we do get more cold weather will be done with in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Jeff. It's been a long bumpy road for me so far with these plants, full of ups and downs. Nearly killed a few of them a couple of times, and finally seeing pods forming makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks Adam and Scott! The 10 day forecast shows a couple of cold nights here at the end of next week. Still high 60's and low 70's during the day though so happy about that.
Would it be a good idea to take the sprouts out to get some fresh air and sunshine, or would I be better off letting them grow a bit more still before taking them out?

Did an inventory on the plants I have under lights. Currently sitting at 65 plants sprouted, plus the aji chuncho's I planted for the growdown and a few more tomatoes to plant thanks to the seeds from Penny. As much I love the Fox Farm mixes so far, with nowhere locally stocking them it'll be far too expensive to keep using them. Decided today to pick up some stuff to try my hand at making my own mixes. Waiting on perlite and possibly some worm castings (tossing up on that one) still.
So far I have-

I also have some Espoma tomato tone and Xtreme Gardening Mykos to mix in as well.

Chris,

Mine went out in the sun Thursday, I have them under a 30% sunshade. Forecast looks good until at least Friday. My opinion is put them out as much as you can, that will help them harden off. I planted 11 plants in the dirt today under a hoop house, 5 maties and 6 peppers. Time will tell

I think the natural conditions help, but bare in mind that last year I killed most of my plants with a botched hardening off. This year I'm going to be much more careful, but luckily I have a nice balcony to employ. Also THP's advice is a powerful resource.

Thanks for the info Scott and Adam. I think tomorrow I may move them out for some sun, then move them either back inside or into a shaded area for the afternoon. Will have to check where I can place them during the week while I'm at work so they're not exposed all day to start with.

Picked up some worm castings and a small bag of perlite today. Couldn't wait for the big bag of perlite to get in to try my hand at making some potting mix. Made a small test  batch tonight using 2 parts peat, 1 part mushroom compost, 3/4 part humus and manure, 1/4 part worm castings and 1 1/4 parts perlite.

Didn't want to run the risk of possibly killing a plant I only had 1 or 2 of in case I did something wrong, so wanted to choose a plant I had quite a few of to transplant. Chose a Jamaican yellow mushroom  to pot up into the mix.

Need to run a ph test to see whether it's sitting in the right zone or not. Looks good to me and feels nice. Light and fluffy.
