My Best Friend Roscoe

AlabamaJack

I had the saddest task of my life this past Tuesday (4 October 2011)...I had to have my best friend in the world, Roscoe, put to sleep...

He was the light in my life, the sugar in my coffee, my shadow when there was no sun, and the most loving and loyal companion I have ever had...

I raised him from a puppy of 10 weeks old to the ripe old age of 12 years and 4 days. He has now crossed Rainbow Bridge and is waiting for me to join him.

I have had many pets in my lifetime but never has one touched my heart like he did.

I am heart sick and can't stop the tears from rolling down my face. I loved that dog more than I loved my own life.

Not looking for condolences, rather just wanting my good friends here at THP to know that I have been sidetracked with my business because of this...please bear with me while I adjust.

The wife and I contacted the North Texas Weimaraner rescue group today. We can not live in this empty house.

Puppies heal all wounds...

Definitely the worst news I have heard in a long time Ronnie. We all know how much he meant to you and my thoughts are with you guys. Now stop the crying and think of how much joy he brought to your house over the years and throw a party for him.

That's a rough one AJ. Had to put my cat to sleep a year ago. He was the first pet my wife and I had (since before we were married 9+ years). He was a good cat, more like a dog if that makes sense. A big fat Siamese named Perseus. They put him down and my wife said they put them to sleep first, but not this vet apparently. I was there with him as he made his journey. I burst into tears as he died. Trying to say soothing words but I couldn't manage much. I ran out of the room after he passed and balled for days.

Nothing can prepare you for the loss of a loved one man. I just try and think of the joy our pound kitty had in life. He was on death row when we got him. Best wishes on your families recovery. :(

Sorry to hear this AJ. It sucks any way you slice it. You did the right thing, and I know a puppy will put a smile on your face soon. Hang in there buddy.

My heart goes out for you AJ.

I've dealt with the loss of a cherished pet about 3 years ago and it was a numbing experience.

These animals have personalities and are our loyal friends, returning our care for them with their unconditional love.

I wish you and your family the best in dealing with and moving through this difficult time.

So sorry to hear about your loss, i've had dogs my whole life and every one of them have left an impact on me. I hope you will look back on every day with him as being a joyful day.

I know you can't replace, but you'll be surprised how uplifting bringing a new friend home can be. You'll always have the fond memories

There is nothing more innocent and pure than the love of our close family members. It's irreplaceable and will live in our hearts and souls for eternity.

Sorry for your loss, Ronnie. It really rips a hole in your heart when you have to put one down. On the bright side, they are no longer suffering, but that is little solace for the emptiness that you feel. Prayers for you and Roscoe.

I had to put my favorite dog down 3 days after her 14th birthday and at that point she was with me for more then half my life. I feel your pain. Celebrate the good times you had.

I'm crying with you, Ronnie. Anyone who's ever had to lay a pet to rest knows how you are feeling and shares your grief.

AJ: very sorry to hear about you loss. i have had dogs for many years and know that they are part of the family. take care.

Time will help heal the wound in your heart Ronnie, fond memories will stop the tears and bring the smiles back.

I'm glad you're looking for a new friend, I hope you find him soon.

It helped me to keep in mind why I made the choice I did and that the right thing to do before is still the right thing to do after. Sorry for your loss.

thanks for sharing AJ and i am sorry for your loss.

i am sure many dog owners on the site have experienced this kind of loss. i too lost my boy to cancer in 2001, i had to carry his swollen body to the vet hospital after trying to deny it was time to let him go. even the vet shed a tear, everyone can tell a good human/dog relationship when they see it.

my Woody, was a pure bred, red american cocker and his gentle nature and friendly disposition was just a joy, i use to call him "Scooby Doo" and he was never allowed to walk past me without being petted or rubbing my foot on him. man how dogs love touch of any kind and they show it in their unconditional love. actually his registered name was Woodrow Jack Daniels.

one of the things i remember the most was late at night when i would try to sneak some chips, he would instantly hear any kind of motion and had to be part of the chip feast. me, chips, a bottle of brandy and scooby doo life really didn't get any better than that.
