PaulG 2014

Grow List 2014 - Many new varieties and a few repeaters.
This is the third year of my original three year plan to grow a slew of different
types to see what grows well here before settling on some consistent performers.
I'd love to grow some of the new varieties from this season again, and some more
of my favorites from 2012, but not enough space.  But I have seed for my favorites for
season 2015, so I have something to look forward to already!

Major goal for season 2014 - lay in a good supply of super hot powder!

Just a quick update on the wild Texas Tepins.  This one has the most ripe pods; all will have to go to the greenhouse when and if I need space for starts in party cups:

The pods were just right, firm and juicy, and even a little heat!

Here's a better shot of them, with a quarter for size comparison:

This is the largest and first to ripen, then the other three from left to right:

De-seeded:

All de-seeded and 'halved':

Toss with a little olive oil, salt and pepper:

Roasted under the broiler for 5 min or so.  Spread the heat throughout the pieces very nicely:

Tossed with a little sliced roast chicken breast.  The final dish had a nice even heat that created a little mouth
burn and slight sniffles, but hey. Winter Manzanos? I'll take it   ;)

Hope everyone has a great time watching the Super Bowl.  Or not.   ;)

It's a nice day here.  Cool and sunny.
It will get warm in the greenhouse for a little while this afternoon

Have a great week, everybody!
I don't know how I missed those posts!!!! Thanks Andy for letting me know! Holy cow brother, those are some picture perfect pods in some perfect pictures! Did you Armor All them before the shot???

I'm hoping the weather behaves and the greenhouse babes can lavish in some warm weather!

Keep it green!
Hey, Scott, thanks, buddy!  Looks like your weather has eased
up a tiny bit - Did you miss the last round of winter weather?

We're having a warm spell here - sort of sunny today and high just over 50

Wow Paul, stop giving your plants steroids... jk they look healthy and robust, keep on doing what your doing...
Thanks, James!  Now just to survive until Spring plant-out!

hope you like it my friend....they all yellow bhuts in 3 diff flavas...tell me how the tastes like ;)
They are all awesome, Jericson.  I could really taste the fruit in the banana one,
And the salty finish in the red one was very unique - a little of the plum flavor
comes through, too.  I don't know what you did to the brown one - seemed smoked.
Is that the one you showed the step by step of on your grow log?  Whatever, it's awesome!

I thought you'd like those, Shane!  They are descendants of
the seed you sent me in 2012!   I did buff them with cotton
swabs  :liar:

Manzanos are one of my favorite peppers, so those just jumped off the page at me!
Hard to miss the tennis-ball sized (almost  ) yellow pods!

Took the Romy6Mystery x Goat's Weed out of the
aerogarden and transplanted into a 2-liter pot.  The
root mass was hard to deal with, and I had to cut the
basket to keep from ripping the roots apart:
_DSC1223a_zpsdb95b470.jpg

As it was, I lost a fair portion of the roots:
_DSC1225a_zps8cafb673.jpg

It looked droopy after losing some roots.  It went in the greenhouse for recovery.  It
should recover just fine:
_DSC1224a_zpsfdd81051.jpg

I also transplanted the other aerogarden starts into 18oz. cups.  These are the Charapita (Stc), and the Bird's Eye HTM (Trippa):
_DSC1226a_zpsd501cef2.jpg

And the c. galapagoense and c.exile chacoenseboth from Stc / Pr0d.  the chacoense had a significant helmet head and very
nearly died.  It is just now starting to grow:

Looking great Paul. The RomyX should be a hard one to kill, and should grow like crazy. The two I had in 10 gallon containers reached 7' or so before they stalled due to the size of their containers. How pubescent are the stem and leaves on that one??? I think I see the fuzzy stems, but the leaves look smooth. Will be interesting to see what this F gen brings!

Looking good Paul!

That plant will do just fine as I'm sure you know, roots it has!

Keep it green!

And we did get that last round, Tuesday was high of around 35°, funny thing, Friday set a record, 92°. I'm ready for Tejas weather, and not NY weather!

Hi Paul,
You have some crazy growth there! How the heck those 1 month old plants can be that bushy??? :-) Amazingly beautiful pictures and plants. Nobody should miss your food pics...it is 1 AM here, and I am hungry like hell! :-))))
Good work!

Thanks, Shane.  I can see they are robust growers already.
The one on the grow shelf has definite fuzzy, purple-streaked
stems.  The leaves start out with a little fuzz, but as the leaf
grows out, the fuzz gets very thin.

Your grow is looking very good, my friend!

Thanks, Scott, the RomyX is recovering in the greenhouse.
Looks like it may lose one of its leaves, maybe two, we'll see.

Man your weather is bizarre this year, buddy, yet your plants
look like they were grown in the topics!

You are too kind, but thank you, Balázs.
Your own grow and pics are pretty awesome, my friend!

I am amazed by the rapid growth of the plants under the T5HO
lights.  The stems are very thick - no need for a fan - and lignified
below the cotys.  All in all very hearty growth throughout.  I am using
a mix of Ocean Forest and Happy Frog in the cups, and they got a
light fish feeding at the one month stage.

Those aerogarden starts are out of control! Nice to see how much root pruning you can get away with. Keep on growin!
The plants get off to a great start in the aerogarden, that's for sure.
I think that either Jericson or Denniz were right when they said transplant
at about 40 days.  You can look at the root system and see when a good time to
transplant is, and the plugs are easy to work with, and the starts hit the soil in
go mode.

You are right about root pruning.  When I root prune my conifer tray plantings
I take out 95% of their roots, put them in fresh soil, hit them with B-1 transplanter,
and they are good to go.  I am always amazed by that.

.... Knock knock?? Update please ;)
Okay, Trippa!  Not much going on, so a weekly update doesn't show a lot    ;)

The greenhouse plants are starting to wake up.  We're closer to Spring Equinox
so they may be sensing the incremental growth in the length of the day!  Been
pinching lots of aphids, and they seem to be under control for the most part.
The round one plants look a little haggard; the leaves are huge, but the new
growth is light in color.   Hoping they will green up as the days get longer and
we actually get a little sun.   Otherwise they look pretty healthy.  Sorry about the
greenhouse clutter and the top down views, but space for taking pics is tight!

The Wild Texas Tepins are coming to the end of their grow season.
My theory is that they should drop a lot of leaves and shed a few
branches and then start to grow out again:
_DSC1239a_zps10d3024d.jpg

Here's the last 5 pods on this plant.  I really hoping they can pull off another season more in sync with the climate:
_DSC1241a_zpsf563025f.jpg

I have more greenhouse and grow shelf pics if I can get a nudge.

Thanks, Jeff.   The Tepins are cool little plants.  That's just how they grew,
I didn't do any shaping on them.  I'm going to put them both in one larger
pot this Spring.

Here ares some pics of the other OWs in the greenhouse.  They have all been battling aphids all winter long, so look a bit raggedy.  I think
they will grow out fine if I can keep 'em alive tip spring!  These are the Honduran Mountain Pepper and the NuMex Twilight:

Greenhouse girls are looking great Paul!

I really like the shape the Tepin's took on too.

They have a fantastic advantage getting ready for spring in the greenhouse, great work Paul!
Hey, Devv, thanks, buddy!  The greenhouse season can get pretty long,
but it definitely extends the grow season big time.

I'm hoping for some outside time in the next month.

These starts live under the aerogarden light for now.  Still no action on the RocoPica seed, and the Datil is looking sickly in the aerogarden.

These are doing better.  Back row; C. Galapagoense, Charapita, C. Galapagoense.  Front row; C. Chacoense var. Exile, Bird's Eye HTM:

Got enough room for all those young ladies?

Keep it green!
Thanks, Scott!  If only they could live in the comfort of the grow shelf and aerogarden forever

I have room for most, with a lot of hand watering.  Will be bottom watering for sure   ;)
I will have to give a few away or let my neighbors grow a few out.  There are two chiliheads
close by!  Too many plants is a good problem to have!
