Grow List 2014 - Many new varieties and a few repeaters.
This is the third year of my original three year plan to grow a slew of different
types to see what grows well here before settling on some consistent performers.
I'd love to grow some of the new varieties from this season again, and some more
of my favorites from 2012, but not enough space.  But I have seed for my favorites for
season 2015, so I have something to look forward to already!

Major goal for season 2014 - lay in a good supply of super hot powder!

Hi Paul,

I'm glad to see you have included the Sweet Hungarian Paprika on your list. You won't regret it.  :P
The rest of the plants are looking great, my friend, keep up tha good work!

Balázs
Thanks, Balázs.  I think that Rick got this pepper from you, so thanks!
It comes highly recommended!

This pepper has its own bittersweet story. The grandfather of my fiancee gave the seeds before he passed away. He was growing this variety for decades. It is also interesting, that he lived close to Szeged which is famous of its Paprika growing history.( other area is Kalocsa) Both are located in the southern part of the country, and the non-pungent paprika was also breeded here more than a century ago.
Before that, to make paprika non-pungent they were removing the seeds and placenta before drying. The old Hungarian name of paprika is 'törökbors', which means 'Turkish black pepper', describing that we got this vegetable via the Turkish, who were ruling a part of Hungary for 150 years, and also indicating its flavour/effect, since bors means black pepper.
Sorry, after reading it through, it seems I am a real smartass, but wanted to share all the info I have :-))))
I wish you a happy growing season my friend!

Hot fish Pepper, Trippa 2012
Chili Costa Rica, The Hippy Seed Company 2012
Inca Lost, Peppermania 2012
Sweet Hungarian Paprika, Balázs/Stickman 2013
Seeds were sown into Jiffy Pellets, and into 'Aerogarden II' as well, so
we can get a direct comparison between the two.  Best case scenario,
I will have seven plants to give away!

That would leave me with 50 plants when all the dust settles.
I will have to give a few of those away, as well

Thanks for this great information, Balázs; I found it very interesting.
It's great to know the origins of some of the species we grow and
makes the fruits of our labors even more enjoyable!

Nice looking list.  Those are just the ones you started so far right?  Plus no OW.
Right, Jeff.  Assuming they all live, that's 3 Manzanos. 2 Goat's Weeds,
3 Yellow Ajis, NuMex Twilight, Black Pearl, Fatali, and Mountain Pepper.
Some of those still might succumb before plant out gets here if this year
is like last season, but only time will tell.

Nice Annuum list Paul ... Hopefully those hot fish peppers show plenty of verigation ... (They don't do well with mites ;) ) I just tested another couple of them for "viability" and they took a while but hooking at the moment ... So all good ... The last ones showed great verigation as well so it all bodes well for you .. Best of luck!!

I knew that Balasz got his seed from his Fiance's grandfather, but not that he lived near Szeged. Nice to know the variety finally. If you're planning on having fewer than 50 plants, you're definitely gonna have to find homes for at least half of your pepper babies, eh Paul? ;)

I hope things are warmer for you than they are here... we're supposed to get down to -4 degrees tonight. Cheers!

I feel ya man.  My choc hab OW died on me, brain was looking real bad, but it is showing signs of improving, and the primo has took a hit, but looks to be living.  2 more months.
I have had no luck with Chocolate Hab OWs either. I had to trim
the Mountain Pepper OW back to overcome some aphid and
wilting issues.  The others are hanging in there.

Good luck getting to Spring, Jeff!
Devv said:
I have no doubt in my mind those OW's will be on the roster this season. You carried them this far, and spring "should" be inching along soon for you.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Scott!

"Inching' may be a bit optimistic, but Spring
will eventually arrive!

I hope so, too, Tristen.  The ones I've seen on the forum are awesome.
Good to know that they have passed the TVT (Tristen Viability Test!)

Thanks, Penny.  Will be getting those tomatoes going in a couple of weeks!

Brrrr, I feel your pain, Rick.  We're in a bit of a 'warming' trend here.  Lows in high 30's and above, highs mid-upper
50's with lots of rain.  Go figure.
I like knowing a bit of the history too, Rick.
Cool stuff.

I keep trying not to think about what I will do with the extra peppers.
I will have to move a few more into the greenhouse in a couple of
weeks, maybe sooner.

What a crazy cool list Paul. A little bit of everything and a lot of some. Your garden is gonna be amazing! Such unique variety. Can't wait to see them in your garden.

Thanks to you and other forum members, buddy!
THPers sent me some amazing varieties to try out this season.
I am looking forward to plant out as well, my friend!

Shane is right Paul, you have one Crazy Cool list brother. What's up with Ma Nature this year though? This has been one of the oddest weather years in quite a while. I even lost a plant, ok it was a rose, to the cold! In Florida!

Think I'll drink a toast to Ma nature tonight and say some prayers for her ;)
If this keeps up I might have to look at a greenhouse too, in Florida

That aerogarden you have is pretty scookum. I may have to look into that. The growth is amazing.

You lost a rose to the cold? After landscaping for a few years and dealing with weeding rose bed after rose bed after rose bed, I can't say I feel emotion. At the same time I've had to remove rose plants with roots as thick as my wrist. Damn things could near live despite being fed a diet of bleach.

Those are funky looking, have to grow those in the future and stuff em like a manzano!

List is looking good Paul. You planning on growing out any plants in the greenhouse?
Thanks, Adam.  the plants will only stay in the greenhouse until plant out time;
It gets too hot in there in the summer.  As it is, I will probably have to put up
shade cloth this Spring to protect from the sunny days when the plants aren't outside.

Thanks, Bill.  The aerogarden is fun to play with.  I'm just starting to get the hang of it.
It has been a strange year, for sure.  I have a feeling it's the new normal.
Our weather isn't so much different, just a bit more extreme the past several years.
Roses are so hardy, I'm amazed you lost one down there!  Speaks to the crazy
weather pattern  you've had this year!.

I took some pics a couple of days ago, Tristen, but haven't had time to
monkey with them yet!  Will try to do that today or tomorrow!
All the Round I and Round II plants are in the greenhouse, and
the Round III plants are in #1 pots on the grow shelf.  Time marches on!
The Mystery Crosses are looking great!
