PaulG 2014

Grow List 2014 - Many new varieties and a few repeaters.
This is the third year of my original three year plan to grow a slew of different
types to see what grows well here before settling on some consistent performers.
I'd love to grow some of the new varieties from this season again, and some more
of my favorites from 2012, but not enough space.  But I have seed for my favorites for
season 2015, so I have something to look forward to already!

Major goal for season 2014 - lay in a good supply of super hot powder!

Just a quick update on the wild Texas Tepins.  This one has the most ripe pods; all will have to go to the greenhouse when and if I need space for starts in party cups:

Looking great Paul ... nice to see you have your hands on that Great douglah strain ... how is the birdseye HTM getting on now??
You can see for yourself, Tristen!

Great growth habit.  Many branches pointing up at a steep angle, sort
of like a broom, very dense with quite a few pods:

Here's one of the pods:

Definitely looking good Paul... and the Bonda-Yellow 7 cross looks like a beast! I'm thinking the Chiero was one of the last plants to set pods last year, but as they were only dime-sized at maturity they ripened quickly. The plant was loaded with 'em too. Keep 'em green!
Thanks, my friend!  I can't wait for the pods on the Bonda cross!

The Cheiro looks great - will get a pic soon.

Just for fun, the chocolate Bhut Jolokia - GaGrowhead, has apparently set a real pod:

A harvest of mini-pods!   Clockwise from top, NagaBrain,
Fatali/Savina,Giant not White Hab, Chocolate Bhut:

Preferred sampling method;

The winner - Chocolate Bhut, even this little pod packed immediate flavor and heat:

On a different subject, one of my 'bonsai' pines has grown out a cone
DSCN0260a_zps8180f149.jpg

This one had pollen sacs on it:

Okay, happy hump day everybody!

Awesome work Paul. It is looking a picture of health! It was a great producer for me this season even through all the issues (2nd season plant and it overwinters easily) ... hottest picked when they have just started going from orange into ripe red... would likely be good for a nice stingy powder.
Loving the bonsai pine and pod pics ... nothing like those first season pods knowing they will only get hotter!!

Awesome Paul! Glad to see a true shape on the choc. I was wondering when I saw the last photo if it had crossed or what.
They are nice pods! I judged the other brown nagas I had against those last season and they won the spot on the list again. Heat and taste!

Thanks, Tristen - your seeds always produce awesome plants!
I'll follow your advice  ;)

The nice weather has prompted some of the plants into producing more
mature looking pods.  We had a nice 3/10 inch (a bit less than 1 cm) of
rain yesterday, and the weather should gradually improve over the weekend
into some more great growing weather and those hotter pods!

Looking great, Paul.  How do you like those Twilights?  I've got some of those going, thought they'd make a nice accent in pots.

What is that you're putting on the cracker (or is that a tortilla chip?) along with the pepper?
Hey, John.  The Twilights are an awesome ornamental; they just keep getting better
throughout the season when the pods start turning colors.  Sort of reminds me of a
miniature Bolivian Rainbow.

That's just a bit of hummus on a piece of tortilla chip.  That's the way I like to eat the
hot powders, too.

maximumcapsicum said:
Mini-pods are looking great Paul! What are you spreading on those crackers? Looks like a good way to get a feel for a pod.
Thanks, Adam!

Right on, buddy   :drooling:  .  It's a good excuse to eat hummus and chips!

Thanks, CF!  Mother Nature has been kind to us this season, so far

Nice and gnarly looking pod set! Already!!

Loved the glacier shot.

Milk those pods.
Thanks, Jesse; I'd like to spend more time in AK.  If you go 100 yards
back from the shore you are in real wilderness!  Would be a great place
for a canoe or kayak pack trip mixed with a little camping and hiking!

I'm appreciating every one of the little Spring pods!  There are 5 or6
little 7 Pot Jonahs I'm going to pick today!  It's great just to get a taste
of fresh pods, even though I really like the powders!

Devv said:
As always nice pics Paul!

And nice looking gams on those gals ;)
Thanks, my friend!

Can't take any credit for them, really.  Mother Nature just sort of does
her thing, while I act like I'm actually making a contribution

That's a high recommendation, Jason!  I have no doubt every one of your
seed stock will be right on.  We are just now starting to see some
mature pods forming on some of the plants.

The PI441598 is one.  The baby pods are showing some early signs of ripening.
Not sure of color yet, but check out the pod on the right!

Inca Lost - THSC 2012:

Same plant.  The flowers and growth habit are almost elegant, in a way:
DSCN0304a_zps8f6d4aca.jpg

Penny's tomatoes are awesome!  I tried some Jobé tomato stakes this season, and they seem to be working pretty well so far:
DSCN0311a_zps1f1b7000.jpg

The Wild Texas Tepin OW died all the way back to the stems, and has put on some new growth:
DSCN0312a_zps93e3017a.jpg

Chocolate Trinidad Scotch Bonnet - GaGrowhead.  Some baby pods turning brown, although hard to see in this photo:

The Chili Costa Rica in the Aerogarden.  I'm going to have to start topping it as it gets to the limit of the light stand extension!

DreamCome True - One of my favorites.  The Rose bed provides some shade
for the Scotch Bonnets later in the Summer:

Okay, that's 10 - have a good day, everybody!

Beautiful pics Paul! You're way out ahead of me in Chinense production.  Nice to see the OW Tepin coming back from the verge too!

That halo pic was a rare thing I bet... have you ever seen Sun Dogs or Parry Arcs too?

Keep up the good work bro'!

Hi Paul,

Nice plants, my friend! Those tomatos are looking awesome! Were you preparing or buying those tomato cages? I am wondering if I could make them on my own...

Thanks for the pics Paul! Enjoying the education. Going to have to pick your brain about soil mixes around the end of the season... Would love it of my pots performed that well.
My pleasure to share them, my friend!  My brain is tiny    so it won't take long to
find out all I know about soil mixes.  BigCedar posted a great soil mix recipe
when he was active on the forum:
http://thehotpepper.com/topic/26929-bigcedars-superhot-grow-2012/page-22.

I find the big containers are like growing in the ground, almost.   There are definite strata
of soil types in them since they are so deep.  they can basically be amended and treated
like in-ground soil in most respects.  And they make my back happy.

Keep up the good work bro'!  Just sort of on cruise control waiting for a nicer day to fertilize the plants!
Thank you, amigo.  Yes, the production of lilliputian pods is my specialty at
the moment     Seriously tho', I appreciate them very much, even though
it is good to see some more mature pods appearing on some of the plants!

Growing up in Southern Oregon's high desert, we used to see sun dogs a lot.
We lived in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range at 4000 feet, on the
margin of the high desert, so there were interesting weather phenomena once
in a while, but I have no idea what all the arcs and halos were called.   Usually
on sunny and clear winter days, as I remember.

Balázs
Thanks, Balázs - your Paprika has nice pods on it - I'll get a pic today.

I purchased these cages.  The only really effective ones are the big green ones.
They have a triangular shape, so are more solid than the wire basket type.  Plus,
you can fold them flat for storage if you wish.  It just so happens that the corner
'feet' of the cage line up with the big container edges, so I can drill little holes
for them and they sit on the pot perfectly.  You could make them if you have heavy
enough wire and can form it.

Very nice Paul!

That Chocolate Trinidad Scotch Bonnet is simply loaded!

The Chili Costa Rica is one beautiful plant!

I see salsa in the near future ;)
Credit to Jason for that one!  I can't wait for summer weather and some 'real'
pods to set and ripen.  If it continues at this rate that would be awesome!

The CCR seed came from the aussie HippySeedCompany in an ornamental
mix package in 2012.  I have high hopes for the outside plant.  The aerogarden
plant doesn't want to set pods even though it's blooming profusely.  It's getting
so big the leaves are shading out the bottom.  I have to cut it back and see what happens.

Paul, Lots of beauty and pods here, but that Trindad Chocolate Bonnet is amazing!

Have a great weekend!

Mike
Thanks, Mike, same to you!

The Choco Bonnet should be an awesome plant indeed, when it really grows out.

The 7 Pot Jonah - GaGrowhead, is setting some gnarly pods.
Here are some fuzzy one-handed shots with my pocket camera  ;)

These caught me by surprise as I didn't notice them until I was removing old and damaged leaves the other day:
DSCN0352a_zps1c0d162c.jpg

You can see the ripe baby pods in this alternate view of the same pepper:
DSCN0351a_zps3d16fde7.jpg

There is a variety of shapes so far:
DSCN0345a_zpsf7656fa0.jpg

Looking down on the plant:
DSCN0343a_zps1f14cf05.jpg

The Bonda Ma Jacques x Yellow 7 - Windchicken, is starting to show some promise:
DSCN0349a_zpsa31c0c5a.jpg

The Orange Manzanos - Stc3248, are making slow but steady progress.  This is the first
year plant's flower:
DSCN0339a_zpse97911e5.jpg

Tiny pods - some fall off, but some are hanging in there.  Just need the right balance of sun and moderate temperatures:
DSCN0342a_zpsb7ed7fe9.jpg

I have noticed the ladybird beetle larvae beginning to pupate, or whatever it's called.  I first noticed this one
on a Goat's Weed leaf.  It was conspicuous because it wasn't moving.  It looks like it has glued down its
abdomen:
DSCN0289a_zps6a01bb3c.jpg

Shortly thereafter, it began to metamorphose; I'm trying to get a series of pics of the changes, but it is hard with
breeze always blowing.  Also, it makes watching paint dry almost exhilarating      I've been watching it for
4 days now, and it hasn't changed much in the last 36 hours.

Added later: Here's a cool link describing the process;
http://insects.about.com/od/beetles/p/The-Life-Cycle-Of-Ladybugs.htm

Looking great Paul.. I am headed to the store to buy my first grow light.. Come Sept. I might have a few pods off of each of my plants Or I will have some great plants that I over winter I will post up a pic in my Glog here in an hour or so..

All right, Kevin!  A grow light!  That sounds serious, bro!  Good job - will check it out!

OK Paul its up and going. I have a guy at the shop that wants to trade trays and domes for hot pepper seeds or starts.. Its a win win for him and I..
