Grow List 2014 - Many new varieties and a few repeaters.
This is the third year of my original three year plan to grow a slew of different
types to see what grows well here before settling on some consistent performers.
I'd love to grow some of the new varieties from this season again, and some more
of my favorites from 2012, but not enough space.  But I have seed for my favorites for
season 2015, so I have something to look forward to already!

Major goal for season 2014 - lay in a good supply of super hot powder!

Just a quick update on the wild Texas Tepins.  This one has the most ripe pods; all will have to go to the greenhouse when and if I need space for starts in party cups:

Glad to see the pellet technique working out for you. I may be an adopter as well... The pellets seem like they'll keep everything warm and healthy until hooks.

Then again seed starting mix may be the way I go too. Seems like everything works so long as you do it correctly.

Happy holidays Paul!

Nice going with your germ rates, and good on Jason for sharing his technique with the Jiffys...It's a great tip, and it makes sense to loosen up the soil in them before sowing because the peat was compressed so much before hydration. The roots need air as well as water and that's why I've always used bagged mix instead. Looks like you're advancing the throttle on your roll amigo!

I hope you and your family have a Happy Christmas, and a New Year full of joy and health. Cheers!
Pedal to the metal, my friend!  I am very satisfied with the Jiffy pellets
to this point.  They have worked better this time than the  last two times
I gave them a shot.  GaGhead is the pellet master!  I guess I should
have been able to figure this out for myself, but it's nice to have expert
help at our fingertips!

Best of the holidays to you and your family, Rick!

  • Beautiful plate shot Paul and I agree, Greg’s SB sauce is awesome on anything … I’m half way thru my bottle :/  Me, too!
  • Dam I concur again, Annie’s da best and her powder too, yea that sounds a bite perve but I’m done with that meat blend and on to da next, hehe :-0
  • Killer hooks brethren and great seed gifts for sure \o/
  • Hab a safe trip and I know I’ve already said it but Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

We made it to the Oregon coast without incident; thanks for the
well wishes, Ramon!

I'm really looking to growing some of these bad boys (girls?) out
this season.  The Bonda x Yellow7 should be totally bomb, and of
course the NagaBrain and MoA are superstars!  Here's hoping

Happy holidays for you, too, my friend!

Jason had me up late last night rolling and fluffing 72 peat pods :) now I have to find time to soak the seeds Nice looking plants and gifts. windchicken has inspired my 2014 grow as well. You and your family have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Good luck in the 2014.
He's a real slave driver, eh!  72 pellets!  I was struggling to get through 30!
Let's see, 30 took me about an hour including putzing about.  So 72 must
have taken a couple of hours!  I found the pellets with the hooks/cotys were
very easy to transplant; easier than the peat-filled cells.

Best of luck with your own 2014 grow, Jeff!  And a wonderful holiday season to
you and your famiy.

Thanks, Penny - I hope you are well and enjoying the holiday season.

Grow is looking good buddy.  Is that your first burgundy you're trying to grow this year?  I think you will like it.
Thanks, Jeff!  Yes, first attempt at a number of these varieties, including the Burgundy 7.
Should be an exciting season if these all make it through to Summer!

Thanks, Jeff - I hope the same for you and your famiy.

Stopped by to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Enjoy!
Back at ya, Scott.

Christmas Eve is almost here!  When I see Santa winging his
way over the West Coast I'll give ya'll a heads up!  Be sure the
cookies and milk are out!

Awesome Paul! Quicker than I thought even!
Merry Christmas to you and your family, including the new spouts!  Haha!
Thanks, my friend.  The same to your houshold!
Me. too, Jason!  First time using a heating pad under the trays, and
I think that made a real difference from past attempts.  The pellets
seem to be working great!  Thanks for the tutorial   ;)

I think you are right, Max.  The key seems to be adequate warmth
and a loose mix that allows root penetration.  Good luck
making up your mind!  Cost wise, the peat seedling mix gets the
nod, but the pellets have their own advantages.

Yeah will have to see. It may come down to whatever mixes they are selling at my local hardware store. They have a big organic base as well. I like supporting their business... they oppose the big boxes that recently opened up shop and I'm not a huge fan of either, blue or orange.

Wow, looking good Paul! I must try that with the jiffy pellets. I actually done it before with coco tho. When I add the water and after they expand I take a plastic knife and just try to pry it out and just put the loosened coco back in lightly and then drop the seed.

I love the coffee filter method, as well as the coco and other ways I've tried but I still remain old school. I love the soil more than anything, but that's just me ;).

Hope your babies stay ok while you're gone and maybe when you get back they'll be having new growth and new true leaves.

Hope you enjoy the holidays and be safe. Happy new years!

Looking good, can't wait to see how they do.

Thanks, Jerry.  They got kind of leggy while we were out of town
cuz they didn't have great light for growing once germinated, but
I transplanted them today nice and deep, so they should be okay.

Hey, Mike, we're on the other side!  Party time coming up;
enjoy the New Year's holiday!

Very nice list and project!
What about the mountain pepper? Sounds interesting to me.

Good luck

Datil
Thanks for the good wishes, Datil.

The Mountain Pepper is like a small yellow habanero.
We got a couple of them from a bartender when we
were in Roatan Honduras last summer, and that is
what he called them.  Here's a link to some Honduran
peppers, but none of them are quite like the ones I got.

They were small, and really hot.  I germinated some seeds last season,
and the plant I got was awesome, bushy, and a prolific budder, even
with a late start.  I'm going to try to grow out some F1 this season, but
I still have several original seeds left I might try if these don't make it.
Will start them in January.  If I get a decent harvest, I'll be sending out
some seeds, for sure.

You can see some pics in my 2013 grow log.

Thanks, Walt.  The seeds kept right on germinating during the four
days we were gone, and got sort of leggy, but the germ percentage
is good.

Happy New Year to you and yours, as well.

Here's the leggy seedlings; all three trays had similar sprouts:

Haha, Jamie isn't the only one who was a good boy this year!  Thanks, Santa!

Hope everyone's enjoying their holidays!

Nice score Paul. Glad Santa missed the few naughty things we did last year  :shh:

We can test the water and hopefully Jericson and Denniz can give us some pointers along the way

Have a Super Duper New Year and as always-

Keep it green and extra spicy brethren  :fireball:

Great...now Jamie and the Mad Scientist both have Aerogardens!!! Can't wait to see you put that to use! I may have to start watching CL...I would love to have one of those just as my germ station.

Nice looking seedlings and a great score!!!
Hey, Jeff.  A little tall, but planting them deep
made the seedlings look normal!
Will post some pics when they grow out a tad.

I'm really looking forward to trying the aerogarden out!

Here's to the new year and the new season

Naughty?  Us?  Nah, just being boys

It will be fun trying the little hydro units out.
I hope we have half the success that Jericson
and Dennniz have had!

You and your family have a safe and happy
New Year, Jamie.

Mad Scientist?  You are half right
It will be a fun test, for sure.  It will take a try or
two to get it right, but it looks like once you have
it down the results are pretty impressive.

Aerogarden had a great sale just before Christmas,
I got mine for about $135.  Seems spendy, but $179
seemed outrageous.  I'll have to use it a lot to make
it cost effective!  With your tinkerer skills, you should
be able to make your own!

edit:  I just noticed the aerogarden ultra is on sale for $80
off.

Hope you're having a good holiday week, Shane!

Gonna be some nice transplants coming out of that aerogarden soon... Congrats!
Thanks, Max!  Hope that's the case.  Will try to get
some c. chinense started after New Year's, which I
hope you and your family enjoy very much!

Great germ rates Paul!

Can't wait to see how the Aerogarden works for you.
They aren't bad, Scott.  some of the varieties are 6/6.
I put three seeds in each cell thinking only 1 or 2 would
sprout, but the heat mat really cranked up the percentage.

I'll be sure to post the aerogarden progress - will be a fun
experiment.

Hope you are getting in some relaxing time this week
so you can have a great New Year's Eve!

Just a little records-keeping entry.

These seeds went into Jiffy plugs on the heat mat on
12/16, so they are at 11 days today.  Two Jiffy plugs
for each variety, three seeds in each.

Also in January, these varieties from Seeds and Things.  I've never
heard of this company, but I traded a buddy some dried pods and
powder for them.   I checked their website, and on the positive side
they only had a few varieties of hot chilies so I'm thinking they might
actually be what they say they are.  Will be interesting to see what
develops:
Hot Paper Lantern
Trinidad Scorpion
King Naga
Red Bhut Jolokia

To start in March:
Marconi Rosso................................... Hume Seeds 2012 F1
Hungarian Sweet Paprika.................. Stickman 2013
Costeño Amarillo............................... SoCal Chilihead pod 2012 F1
Giant Jalapeõ.................................... SoCal Chilihead 2012

That would make a total of 30 plants if everything germinates and
grows out.
