food Sandwich of the Month

I would have liked to see a few more fish sammich's but admittedly I could have posted at least one more than I did.

I doubt however, this being Easter n' all, that anyone's eating much fish today.

Plah!

So with that I'd like to go with a sammich near and dear to my heart and one that I have been craving something fierce for a long time now....

April SOTM shall be Sloppy Joe

My mama made sloppy joes for us as kids and we loved 'em. Her simple version was cast iron, garlic, diced onions, ground beef,
sometimes diced bell peppers, a small splooge of yellow mustard, and ketchup. That's it. Served up on white bread, which back then was all that was available. It was tres bon.

I'm torn between doing the one my mama used to make vs. a Cuban picodillo style with chopped olives.

Slop on!

If I spill, I'll end up not bothering to execute because spilling with 'use up' the interesting ...

I need to get back on the SOTM saddle, it's probably my favorite thread ... especially since we don't really get all that boozed up very often, anymore ...

Ok, I guess I'll start off the month with the first SOTM... I have never made a sloppy joe in my life. I looked up a bunch of peoples different recipes and what not, and formed my own. I wanted less slop, so thats what I shot for. However, sloppy joe ain't no joke. There is no such thing as a not sloppy joe. This thing was a mess. It gave mouth fisting a whole new meaning. I destroyed this sandwich with my mouth.

Sloppy joe mix was made as such:

1.5lbs lean ground beef
1/2 Onion finely chopped
1 red bell pepper diced
1 jalapeno diced
2 cloves garlic minced
2 tbs brown sugar
1 3/4 cups water
1 tbs dijon mustard
Dash worcestershire
Dash balsamic vin
3/4 cup ketchup
1 tsp JHP tepin powder
salt
pepper
red pepper flakes

Sauted onions and peppers, added garlic and beef, sauted till brown. Added water, and seasonings, brought to boil, reduced heat to simmer for 40 mins untill most liquid evaporated off.

Slop on a hamburger bun and add some pickled penos

This is where I give mouth fisting a whole new meaning. Body slammed that sloppy ass joe in my mouth. I had to eat it in three bites before I lost everything.

I ate 3 of these. I loved it. First time joe was great. This was probably my last food hurrah for some time, so at least I went out big.

For those of you that know your Joe's, and given what I have told you about mine, any advice to make my Joe better?

HTH that sammich looks like fine wine to me amigo.

I'd want to taste it first and then decide if it needs more sauce.

I'm balls deep on that sammich.

Chingalo chingon!

Thank ya all. I think next time I would make it a bit more saucy. I'll definitely be havin at it again. That was delicious stuff.

I have been eating whatever the hell I want lately so this was the last of this sort of meal for a bit.

Reviving the hippy cooking thread soon!

I know it's not the SOTM, but I had my first of many to come Reuben's lastnight. Where have you been my life sammie! Damn you :D

Rye, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing and slow cooked corned beef (Kiwi staple). Butter roasted baby 'taters in the background.

Reminds me of one of my favourite sandwiches growing up. One of my Dad's favourite meals: Corned beef, boiled carrots, stewed cabbage and mashed potatoes with a mustard sauce. I'd pile the corned beef, a bit of cabbage, butter, pepper and mashed potatoes into a sammie. Good times!
