stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

Primo, & Douglah pods look super, great pod porn! But that Indian Carbon just looks untamed, heheh … awesome! Your Manzaon is getting huge, she’ll soon pass you up and OMG Brirgits trio looks wicked, great shot!

Funny you took a shot of a hornworm, I killed one yesterday and another today but only took 2 shots today as we’ve had a busy weekend. I keep finding their eggs too, seems like I’ve crushed 75 now over the last several weeks. I didn’t expect them to be that large yet as I still have one in a glass to monitor its birth. Well enough of dem bastards …

Great fantastic awesome out of dis world harvest … keep up dat great work brethren and hope you have a great week!

Looking amazing dude! Toss some of those gnar pods and ladybird larvae my way! Lol jk jk.

Keep on kicking ass bro. Your plants look way beyond satisfied, they are stratisfied!

Edit: and walkgood sorry to hear of hornworm troubles. If there's one thing that makes me feel better about seeing not a single ladybug this year, it's not seeing a single hornworm. Keep up the struggle brother! Crush dem!

Over the top as always, brother.  I expect nothing less from your grow (and your kitchen table).
It's cool to see the Yellow Aji pods getting it on.  I hope the weather gods keep blessing you!

Damn Shane....what an awesome garden grows your way.

Awesome pod review, that guy burn (more pain than burn) is what stops me most times from eating super hots whole/halved.....pieces lol it just destroys me and is no fun. The mouth/throat burn, now that's tolerable.

Super sexy pic of the Numex Centennial. So much awesome going on there. The Brigit's....it's alright...a little short if you ask me, I heard pruning it down to the base helps that.

Pods pods pods pods, glad to see the garden doing well for you this year! Have a great Sunday, I'll be tackling a 40 mile bike ride....good bye thighs hello ice packs!
Thanks my brotha...hope the ride went well! Hmmm...that pruning to the base sounds counterintuitive, but it works! I have cut them down to the roots twice thus far! :liar:

You've surely got it together brother! The pics you've put up are doing you proud. It's a bummer that you have a couple of sick plants, but statistically, you're gonna have at least a couple when you grow as many plants as you do. Those "grade A" pics of the Brains are genius!
Thanks Rick...some things are together, others are just there. Hahaha, I am still having some fun with it, and although I am doubting those two plants ability to pull through maybe they'll surprise me. They continue to look worse and are now basically green sticks, but hey...they're still green!

Like the story about the little Manzano that could!

And that other Manzano tree is huge!

Good job bro!
That little Manzano got her a spot in a bed in front of the house. No irrigation...mostly shade, but some early sun during the summer. If it keeps on growing it should overwinter in place for years without any help. If it doesn't make it...oh well. I am just gonna let it do what is does and see what that may be!

I liked the aroma of the 7 White a lot, it's fruity with some smokey aftertaste. It's not as hot as a 7 Pot Brain Strain for example, at least mine wasn't.
A few were basically done...just the underside ever so slightly green. I let them go another week so they should be good and done when I get home this weekend!!! Really cool pods, can't wait to give them a taste!

Thanks Ramon! Several plants are really big...the Birgits, Manzano and Jamies mystery are just plain nuts! I got a little something I need to send you soon!!! I have killed about a dozen freakin hornworms so far...I hate em! Your harvests are no slouch either my friend!

Thanks Pep! I used to live right up the road from you in Stafford! Wow...long time ago. Had a hell of a car accident there in 1988...fingers crossed you don't run into any of them nasty critters!

So great to have you back Pauly! Missed your quick wit and crafty updates. Hope you become a more frequent visitor!

A couple more pics I snapped Sunday...
5GEF9qY.jpg

Here is the other Romy6 Mystery plant...the one less pubescent. They both darken slightly before ripening...but this one goes full chocolate for a few days before they turn red.

4BNxPuK.jpg

Here is a gnarly freakin 7 Pot Rennie...this one will be more painful than the last...and I ain't eating it!

SPySbH4.jpg

This is on the other Yellow Brain plant...pods aren't as big or gnarly...but most have perfect shapes.

SQAb3XU.jpg

Don't remember...think this is the Yellow Billy Boy??? Another one I am super thankful I decided to grow...

iLpIjPu.jpg

Finally a couple Giant Twisted Chocolate Habs...(CMPMAN_1974 via Pr0digal_son) this plant started off in a funk...leaves not yellow but lighter than everything else, and some stunted odd mutated growth...I trimmed all the mutated stuff and let it be...and now it's starting to put in some work!

1Xhg7Aw.jpg

Couple Yellow Brains starting to color up...

wTBf9M1.jpg

Hot apple anyone??? C'mon color!!! I may pull some green Manzanos this weekend for some salsa...can't wait any longer!!!

nL7yHK4.jpg

Another gnarly Monster Infinity (gnslngr)...Yellow Brains on the right in the background.

9vUalhM.jpg

Charapita Yellows...hundreds on this little guy. Yet another one I am super excited about!

2pwqwp8.jpg

Sunday's Pull...the rest of the pods off the sick Yellow Cardi, Some Poblanos and Anaheims already roasted and ready to peel. Some snacking peppers along the top with some immature Birgits in the upper right, below them are some more Romy's Mysteries, Goat's Weed, a couple Yellow Brains and two Morugas above the tomatoes...upper left are 4 small Barrackpores and a single Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon...The Snacking Peppers, Poblanos, Anaheim, Birgits, some Goat's Weeds and the Tomatoes went into some vegetable soup...good stuff!

Thanks for checking in folks!

Out of curiousity Shane... how long do you think it takes Manzanos to get from flower to ripe fruit?
Meant to answer this question...I am thinking 45-60 days depending on weather...we'll see. I will look back to when the pods formed and do the math once I have some color.

that last rennie looks more like mine are looking, very nice update.
Good to hear! I have dozens on there...some gnarlier than others. All nice and bumpy with an appearance somewhere between a Brain and a Barrackpore...very cool plant!

Awesome shots pictures Shane as usual, I’m loving the look and picture of the perfectly shaped Yellow Brain pod \o/

Great pull on Sunday but where’s the pic of the vegetable soup ;)

How are the sick plants? Don’t give up brethren, I know you have it in you if you have the time. Once they pop some green leaves I’ll tell you what I did with the one I brought back but not until then.

Wishin you a great day and upcoming weekend!

PS My seeds are almost ready but I’ve been pulled in many directions, hoping they are ready for transport by Friday, we’ll chat off line then if you have time …

Love the way you've timed this "garden," Shane: cukes and toms later, I'm guessing. Or certainly cukes later? Gotta get ready to do a batch of bread'n butter, dill, and uh, try to keep cukes coming until a few chinense turn as sweet/hot pickles, canned, is my best "give-away." (Never get jars back but . . . eh.) Got back from totally ignert faculty meeting (I don't even ask why those are inane, stupid, waste of time any longer) and had 6 messages about "them sweet hot pickles." Love the White Wonders, btw! So much to comment on vis a vis, supers! Love that twisted choc hab! And think the sick chillren will pull through . Really do! I'd have to pull that manzano just to taste! Beautiful stuff!

Shane my brotha!! As so many have said just amazing grow. Always a humbling experience looking at your gorgeous pots, giant plants and fat pods. Your mystery annuums are kicking ass and takin names. I agree hottest annuum on the planet.

 U DA MAN!!!!!!!

Great pics and harvest there, Shane.  I'm jonesing, here.  Dang it, I've got work to do out there and I'm stuck here working on the computer, well when I'm not over here in the glogs, anyway.

(When does a "day" start around here?  I'm still out of "likes" from last night.)

Shane, your Manzano is looking great!  The OW from the seed
you sent was flowering and setting tiny pods before we left for the
coast.  I'm hoping they haven't dropped by the time we get back.
It would be great to actually have some pods before next Spring
I'm amazed that one would OW outside for you down there.  I'll be very
interested to see how that goes for the next year or two.

I always love looking at the containers by your pool.

Thanks Ramon!!! I try fo-sho with the pics...just no comparison to the greats like Pr0d though. I didn't take a pic of the soup...'cause it was freakin soup. Sick ones got another dose of aspirin...and are still looking rough. just a waiting game now.

Thanks Annie! Timing was good...Think if I'd have been able to wait one more week until plant out it would have been even better. Last year I rushed getting them out...this year I ran out of space inside...Next year, ahhhhh....I'm sure I'll screw something else up! Haha. My cukes are looking pretty rough, I don't think they're getting enough water. Will try to remedy that this weekend. Gave them a dose of aspirin too. All my aspirin doses are mixed with a little epsom salt. Thanks a billion lady, need to go see what you got cookin over on your grow!!!

Jaminator! Them annuums are such cool plants!!! Do yours turn brown just before red too? Can't wait to powder some up...think its gonna be the best powder yet! Them alone or as the base with either Goat's/pequins or go the other direction and them as a base with same supers to kick it up a notch. Just thick enough that they'll hold enough smoke...mmmm.

Haha...I am not sure on the likes. I think you can "bank" some if you go a few days without using them all up. Some days I am out right away, but when I am unable to get on for a bit I seem to get a few more. Heck I dunno...I don't understand why they regulate likes??? They don't want us all to be too nice to each other I suppose.

Hey Pauly!!! The Manzano is sure making me look like I know what the heck I am doing...Haha. Glad to hear several folks are having good luck with the plants and seeds that made their way out and about. Fingers crossed yours are loading up for you! I don't think they'd have any trouble overwintering in place close to the house...especially it I throw a sheet over them on the cold nights. It's still kicking and growing like a weed now that it has some more room for the roots!

This two week trip has me a little scared. Bad timing with the weather and a few sick ones. HOT HOT HOT here. I hear Death Valley may set an all time record this weekend near 130 degrees...wowch! Here are a few I snapped yesterday...

daqy1eq.jpg

Yup...I hate 'em!

KaZvqal.jpg

Will have the first pretty good harvest this weekend. Not huge, but finally respectable. Won't be Jamie size just yet. Here are the two Yellow Brains from the earlier post that have finished coloring up.

iGWcyRA.jpg

Finally some ripe pods on pheno 2 of Jamie's Mystery X!!!

FBHhDB8.jpg

Cool shot here of the chocolate and ripe pods in a crossed sword formation! Some green pods in the background for reference.

S5sC6AH.jpg

It's neighbor the Goat's Weed...amazing contrast and colors on these guys!

fu2ZFh4.jpg

Nice knowing you folks!!! The Reaper is knocking at the door! Ughhh....what to do. Maybe I'll send this one to someone else to test out???  This one has more of a bhutish shape, but some look almost correct. Wonder if the heat is consistent???

5uXQGjm.jpg

Ohhhh...remember this one??? Haha, another Rennie almost ready. Several more on the plant showing some color too! Woot!

zDzZ51F.jpg

And a boat load of Freakin Indian Carbons almost done!!!

hLntlEQ.jpg

Bubble Gum anyone? I dunno how true they are? There is one that has already gone all red, No sign of the Calyx turning yet. Small first pods though...time will tell.

oIFXxZ4.jpg

Pequin is loaded as well...none ripe yet. These are my pocket snackers once ripe.

Hope everyone is ready for update overload!!! I am going on leave and don't fly out for my trip until next Thursday, so I will be doing much prep out there for my two week absence. Hope to get all caught up on everyone else's stuff too. Mama will have to work Monday through Wednesday, so I will be all alone with the Garden, Camera and Puter!!!

Have a great weekend everyone!
Shane

Hola Shane hope all is set for your trip and that you don’t worry much, gotta train the family while papa’s away, hehe. I’m doing the same with both kids and wife now for I’ll be out of touch for 5 days next month. Thing that gotz me worried is the hornworms, I’ve never seen it this bad for years there’s only one or two and now I’ve nailed dozens plus 100 eggs plus by now. Just killed another one and a few eggs this morning, I see another one bites the dust at your place too, I hate dem too brethren.

I see your plants & pods are kicking azz but that Indian Carbon … mon what a beauty! Take care and try not to worry, it drives me crazy thinking about it.

Have a great weekend!

Lookin great Shane! Super healthy looking plants and some sick pods you got there! Can you save me a few Rennie and monster infinity seeds?? Those pods are just upper sick and I think they would make a great addition to my garden next year!
