stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...
IMG_0656.jpg

Well here is the list for now...If something you sent didn't make it I still have them, and will get to them some day. Momma is already pissed!

I think I will skip most all of the grocery store available varieties this year so I can grow more of the good stuff...That's if for now everybody! Hope you all have a great season!!!

Shane

You're a freakin' beast Shane! I have nightmares about the stomach pain you describe. Make my mouth feel like its melting into my stomach but those cramps.....words cannot describe.

Your pod shots are beauty's! My Briggy's giving off some ripe pods now too. That infinity looks licensed to kill...

Keep the week rolling along...Friday's a coming! Happy (all 9 minutes left) hump day.

Yeah...mouth burn sucks...trhoat burn really sucks...but gut burn is the worst!

Just moved the pics here to keep from having to jump back and fourth between pages...

Brain Strain from Coheed also...freakin HUGE pods on this beast!

lkfKJKL.jpg

I will need a whole new freezer just for Birgits! Crazy variety...most Baccatums like to reach for the sky and put out a ton of pods...but this one make all the others bacs its beeotch! Super sweet...plenty hot but still edible.

r1hSc6h.jpg

Reaper left...Primo X Rt...I ate that stupid reaper...outright and whole...some of you may have read the review over on the Reaper grow thread, but I figured I would post it here as well...

Written Sunday:

"I will take you on the ride...I debated for a minute or two as I was sorting through today's pull if I was gonna do it. I pulled the stem and took a whiff. Strong scent and I could already tell it was gonna be a hot one. I tossed it in my mouth and just held it between my teeth for a few seconds, still debating...chomp, chew...

Could taste a slight sweetness out of the gate followed almost immediately by a strong bitter chinense flavor. It reminded me of the Barrackpores I ate last year. I could taste the potential for a sauce or powder in there before it really punched me in the face. By 10-15 seconds still chewing, but I knew I was in for a ride...hard hitting heat. I have eaten several Supers that teased you for a minute or so and had me wondering if I had eaten a dud...this was NOT like that. 30ish seconds swallow...followed by immediate convulsive hiccups. My system didn't like it...this is the first pod EVER that had me almost puke. Touch and go by second 45 and the throat burn hits...one of the worst throat burns I have ever had. The Monster Infinity was slightly worse, but was a much larger pod. Another first for me was uncontrollable saliva...I was drooling like crazy. Not a huge fan of the vids where guys eat a pod and then show themselves spitting and drooling...if I'd chosen  to vid this one I would have been "That guy." It was nuts...and nothing to do about it but stand over the trashcan and let it flow...1-6 minutes more of the same but getting worse. Crazy hot...no longer doubting test results...just...hold...it...down...Hiccups stop, a steady flow of explicit words flowing with drool...Peak...coming down...still searing my throat, drool subsiding. Sit in my chair with a few napkins to wipe sweat/tears/snot from my head/face/neck...after 15 minutes burn had come way down and I decided I better hit some milk to prevent stomach problems. Tongue partially paralyzed, hard to drink...another first.

30 minutes have passed...slight tongue burn remains along with a pretty good gut burn which still has me worried. Need to eat something...and take a tums or three.

I have eaten MANY supers...Scorpions of all types, 7s of all flavor and color, this one was as hot or hotter than anything I have eaten. I have eaten primo powders and even primo poppers, but never a fresh one. Will now have to do that to compare. I no longer doubt the claims...and although I am not a calibrated spectrowhateveryoucallit...its hot, and not to be taken lightly."

The aftermath was very painful...I held it down but probably shouldn't have. I laid on the floor for about a half hour just trying to find a place to hide from the pain...ate a banana and started to feel a little better. I was in pain and had to stoop over hands on knees several times as I tried to cook some dinner on the grill for the fam...never before, another first. After dinner stomach felt tolerable again...but not good. I was really beat...like I had just run a marathon, and felt like that all the way through the evening and the next day! Spent my lunch on Monday sleeping...although I couldn't really differentiate the difference in heat level between it...a Brain...an Infinity...Barrackpore...I am certain my body could. Too many firsts to deny that it was different...especially the way I felt the day after! I am not looking forward to trying the Primo next...but I got the recipe for the elixir that Matt uses...so maybe that'll help???

Wonderful looking pods Shane!

And your added paragraph cements my never wanting to eat a whole pod. Did you see the vid of the guy who ate the two even hotter type Reapers? Wonder how he felt later on....

Tomorrow is Friday, a well deserved Friday!

Shane, dude, you had your Man Panties on the day you ate that Reaper! Not sure I could handle it. I'm probably good up to a Douglah or so. That yellow Primo that Jamie sent me had me chugging milk and it was only a quarter of the pod. Glad you made it through brother.

Did I see something about a transfer coming in? Hope your next billet is a good one, would you be up for a Training assignment in Orlando :)

Our thanks for prayers and good thoughts while we were going through buying our new home, we really appreaciate it.
Have a great weekend

Thanks! Hotter type??? I'll put these bad boys up against any! I'll have to check that vid, and in doing so will know that my choice not to film my episode was a good call! Yup!!! Fri-Day it is!!!

Haha...my Man-nies! Put a hurten on me for sure. If you can handle a dougie you can handle anything! Some of the yellows are freakin hotter than a lot of the reds. Those Yellow 7 Congo looking pods I have are scary hot! Yeah...should be transferring back to a ship in January, no orders yet though. I'm glad you folks got the house, I think all that good karma you built up with kindness paid off!

Great  pics of great peppers. Would like to read your primo review. I only use bits and pieces on egg, not even near a whole pod.
Haha...after hearing a few folks had a harder time with their Primos I'm not so sure I shouldn't just copy and paste the story from above and save myself some anguish! We shall see, busy weekend of kids and football...if I can afford to be hurting for a bit I may try it???

Here are a few pics from today. Some are slowing down...some are sick, but most are still trucking and continuing their slow climb out of their funk. I have increased their feeding to every weekend. Foliar and root drench and may top dress with some manure this weekend too. I think they have used up most of the nutes in the containers by now...or it has washed through.

I will start with one of them that looked the worst! My Manzano...
bkO7yEs.jpg

This plant was so lush and green a month ago...then started a slow decline and was solid yellow and I though it might actually kick the bucket. I removed all the yellowing leaves which left it about bare and really poured the nutes to it...

TPOf7Bt.jpg

It has started blooming again and is putting out some good looking new growth! Just in time for me to harvest this round...hopefully it'll set another round in time for them to ripen this season. The little Manzano that could out in the front yard is really doing well, but staying smallish. I need to take some shots of that little chica...she's got some open flowers and hopefully soon some pods! She's in a spot that gets very little direct sun...maybe an hour or two early in the day. Northeast corner of the house...she seems to be liking it and is my perdiest plant right now.

KDirITZ.jpg

Here's a shot of where my Pequins and Charapitas are growing together...I sure to love my wilds!

FVMlREs.jpg

and if you look closely you'll see something else loves them too!!! Those little empty stems weren't picked by me! Dang birds!! :mope:

BQq6fla.jpg

Charapitas...

rBfYOPL.jpg

Well...we got some good candidates for the Primo eating thang...Damn they just look mean!

LvVuAvN.jpg

Another Primo...

ciSlqV9.jpg

Reapers too...nope! Not gonna do it...and y'all can't make me!

HuAsmJx.jpg

S'more Reapers....man, my stomach is having flashbacks!

0H1OPxx.jpg

And another one...same one pictured in the previous post...I have quite a few ripe ones now. Hmmm sauce or powder???

Well, the dog days of summer are being harsher to some than others...but all in all they're doing OK. I only have a couple plants that look
'happy" but most are starting to bloom and set again finally. I should have one more really big pull then it'll be slow going for a while. I may pick up some time release stuff and some sulfur to help them finish turning the corner. The Birgits are still climbing, but they're slow going right now also. Really need some cooler weather and for this round of pods to go ahead and ripen and pull them if they're going to really start climbing again. Look for the harvest shots tomorrow folks!

Happy growing!
Shane

Hi Shane,

I've been following your glog, and all I can say is wow! Those Primo and Reaper pods look real scary... I love the pics you are making, they are really beautiful, I could imagine to see them even in an ad...promoting lethal weapons!
Keep on posting those pics, and driving us crazy  :fireball:  (who would not like to try the 'skyscraper' Brigit Locoto next season? Cause I definately would!  :P )

Ramon!!! Thanks brotha...your pics are top notch as well. I don't mind the vids. but you can only do so much describing while your face, lips, tongue, throat and stomach are melting. Matt does a real good job with the vid and with the narrative...I am still trying to work up the nerve for the Primo...ughhh. :fireball: I picked some good ones and they're sitting on the counter.

Aight....so little harvest/pod porn update!

Goat's Weed ripening a new round of pods!!!

Mystery "Congo Yellow" Loving this plant...saving some seeds. Y'all gotta try this one...a super a twist...and some more twists...and some turns...and a whole lotta Yellow flavor with Red heat!

Three different Brain Strain plants...and three slightly different phenos...two sources.
vgeV9rF.jpg

Coheed Brain Strain plant 1...Traditional Brain shape. Average size pods...

F2q8yyZ.jpg

Coheed Brain Strain Plant 2...still sorta tradional, but more Moruga looking blunt tails...and HUGE pods.

jDCv2QP.jpg

Romy Brain...more elongated, but some are traditional looking. Anyone got the cojones to eat one of each???

Ee8VJ0N.jpg

Hmmm...another one I'm not standing in line to eat...Douglah from Coheed.

KM9L6MJ.jpg

Oh...and this one either...Monster Infinity from gnslngr (tailed pheno) Looks like this one is injecting the green pod with some death juice...

I didn't get around to pulling everything this morning...and had some special requests I needed to get  :hot: on powder wise...so I was a slacker and only pulled a couple pods...

TpkcYQc.jpg

8jOj6q7.jpg

It looks like a bunch of pods...but really its MORE!

Still to harvest the Wilds, Goat's Weed...and the Birgits. which numbers wise will be as many pods...or more. All three of those plants except the Pequin are really stuck to the plant and require snipping each pod loose...ughhh. Great problem to have I suppose! Numbers on almost all will be much lower for a while...summer has caught me. Most of them are starting to flower again...so there is hope for the future. To be honest...if they all dried up today, they've done me proud!!! What a great season...and by Socal standards is only a little more than half over!!!

I have pods in the smoker and in the dehydrator...more pics to come. More pod shots and maybe even some foodie pics!

Happy Saturday errybody!
Shane

Nice pull Shane!

Those Manzano's look like tomatoes!

I can see that's a ton of pods and they're piled deep, can't beat that!

Have a great weekend!

Oh, that Reaper is a HP22G, so says the vid. Supposedly coming in at 2mil plus scovilles

Nice experiment with the different brain strains.  I have one which puts out rather smallish pods which are sometimes spiky, actually very nice.  The oil on the inside seems more substantial than the TS Morouga Blend.

I was quite invisible on the forum lately, new job, new house etc... But since it takes a good 50 mins to get into the office, I have plenty of time to check out 10-15 glogs every day. That plant (no..no..tree) is crazy, we had a discussion in the office about peppers on Friday, and when I told the guys that some types can reach 10 feet, nobody believed me...until I sent them your pics with the ladder.  :P
What camera are you using? Those pics are like the ones which are taken in a studio. Beautiful, deep colors.
I will definitely try out the Brigits Locoto, but I would need seeds for that project... Are you interested in trying out some Hungarian peppers?
Congratulations on the harvest, it is so good to see those pics, my friend!
