Thanks for looking in folks if you have any idea what the issue is with that purple bhut lemme know!
Shane
Is it all the leaves on the purple bhut or just the ones on the bottom? I'm sure you've quarantined it... just for yuks... you might try a couple tablespoons of epsom salts around the plant and water it in sparingly. It won't hurt the plant in any case, and it might help. Checking soil ph might be a good idea too. BootsieB was using some liquid plant foods on his chiles and found that the soil got too acidic, so he added sodium bicarb and water and got a reaction! I think dolomitic lime might be a better choice. You wouldn't have to work it into the soil... just sprinkle it on the surface. Watering would be enough to slowly dissolve the lime and wash it down to the roots.
Everything else looks great, and you're starting more besides. You, my friend, have a true pepper jones... :hell: ;)

It's all of them, and the pods too...haven't done anything yet. Should have yanked it yesterday. Gonna have to wait till I get home now.

Shane, your   More starts? Crazy or not, its still awesome! I started two more seeds a little over a week ago (using the paper towel method in a lidded container) and got hooks from both of them two days ago. Waiting a bit longer to put them in solos.
Anyways, I only did two more, but your doing 9 :insertshocksmilyguyhere:! I want to do starts on the yellow brain coheed sent me, but with such a short season I figure there's no point really.
Anyways, hope your fathers day was good.
Aaron

Man - sorry to hear about the purple bhut, it's an awesome plant, I hope it can bounce back even though it looks bad. Have you posted anything in any other areas of the forum to see if anyone can id this problem? I wish I knew the answer for you, sucks to see the bad stuff get a leg up on you. If you pull it, instead of throwing it out, maybe pot it up, give it compost tea (I know you've been on a regimen already, right?) some kelp extract - I don't know - stuff to boost the immune system? That's all I can think of from my reading I've been doing lately - boost the immune system in order to help the plant fight it off on its own. Ugh - anyway, good luck!

Another pod same plant...Hope they come out white!!!!! Seeds were from Griff...will have to ask him if he had any white podded plants last year???

I really couldn't tell ya. All of my 7 pot varieties came from fresh pods that I got from another member last year. I will be looking forward to seeing how they turn out!

So after snooping around...I'm pretty sure it's mottle virus. Ughhhhhhhhhh

Unfortunately, I agree with your analysis. :mope:

Make sure if you do quarentine them that you wash your hands before touching another plant. I've read that some of those viruses can be spread by physical contact.

Keep your chin up!

Yeah...I am crazy! I'm going to try to limit them to 1# pots for the wilds and 2 or 3# for the others for this season and overwinter them then into the ground next season!

Too late trashed it...think some of my tomatoes may be infected too. Ughhhh. The rest of the peppers up there look healthy, but I think the Mucho Nachos might have it and are fighting it off. I am going to give them all a dose of aspirin as per the Guru advise...I don't know what else to do??? May just have to find out the hard way which ones have strong immune systems and choose them for next years seeds!

That's fine man...really excited about that plant! Can't wait to see how they turn out!

    Chronic poddage...... CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah...those were my college years!

Yup pretty certain...oh well. Only time will tell how bad it gets..fortunately the only way it can be transmitted is by insects feeding on one then the other. Touching the plants or them touching each other will not transmit it, just increase the odds by transferring pests between plants.

Today's harvest is bitter sweet...
P1010641.jpg

Some Cherry toms and the purples off the plant I pulled...

P1010643.jpg

You can see how dull and mottled all the pods are....ate one and it was pretty good though! A bit of AnnuumXChinense flavor with heat on par with an Orange Hab...

P1010644.jpg

The Jamaican Hot Yellow showing some color...

P1010646.jpg

Different angle same pod...

Thanks for the concern and well wishes....I'll keep you all posted.

Dang, Shane, sorry to hear about the mottle virus. Hoping you are
making progress, although in Melissa's log I saw you mention that
10 were infected? Have any more started to show, or are you clear?
Man, do you have a bull's eye on your roof?
Seems like the virus just homes right in on your yard. I know you
will conquer it, but it's a shame to have to spend time dealing with
that instead of just sitting by the pool eating bon-bons! Or making
wood boxes. The pods you showed look great, and your container plants
are rockin'. Guess that's the good thing about having lots of plants!
Knocking on wood here. Maybe our lousy weather is keeping the
viruses and bugs down. Right.
Take care, my friend; here's looking ahead to better days
BTW how's the graft taking or can you tell yet?

WOW Shane! Your plants have taken off! Awesome video as well. Lovin all the pod pictures. Gets me all excited for the months to come around here! That pequin cross is very cool, let us know how the flavor is on the ripe ones. Grow on buddy! that virus is pretty nasty lookin :( glad you've got it under control my friend. Hope all is well with you!

Not clear at all, I suspect there are several other infected...but they're fighting it off. Pretty sure 4 of my Mucho Nacho plants have it, and maybe 3 of the 4 Big Jims along with my "not" Fish Pepper. They all look suspect and have recently slowed in growth but are still putting out blooms and setting pods. I think their immune systems are handling it. Not certain, and don't want to go overboard ripping everything out. I am just going to follow the Guru's advise and start giving them some aspirin along with more frequent tea feedings and hope they can figure it out. I am also going to move my container plants further away from the infected area and split them up so it will be less likely they'll all get hit if one comes down with it. Hey...the front yard needs some peppers out there too! Could be natural selection working for me...the plants that come through this without ever showing symptoms will automatically be on my grow list from now on!

The grafts are a couple potential success stories and failures rolled into one! I think I missed the mark or accidentally pulled the Black Naga scion out of its notch when I taped them up because it wilted right off the bat and I don't think its coming back. Other than that they all look really pissed...but alive! I am going to keep them in their shady recess of the front porch until I am certain that each graft has failed...or succeeded!

Thanks for your concern brother!

Forgot to post the new potential scab players...
2 per Jiffy (one per on the scorps)

Romy6 Mystery Pepper (Jamie)

The rest are seed train seeds...
Super Scorp(I believe are from AJ???)
Datil
Chaparita Yellow
Aji Cito
La Reinas Bird
PI 438658
Hope they pop!
Not looking for much (any) production out of these, but if I can get a couple pods for seeds to share before next season that would be cool...they will all be overwintered in 1-3 gallon containers.

Hey, scabs have their place! Is your grow a union shop? ;) I bet you will do
well with them. We're going to have a really long growing season this year
Some of those varieties are unfamiliar to me.
You are doing the right things to protect your plants. I'd be interested in the
rationale behind using aspirin - does it make the soil too acidic for the virus?
More tea feedings can't hurt, for sure.
Okay, my friend, good luck and good growin', and pullin' for those grafts to take hold!

Pepper-Guru gave me the tip. Aspirin contains salicylic acid which is the same compound plants use to fight disease. Foliar feeding with aspirin is believed to give their immune system a boost. I am mixing it with a little mineral oil in a gallon sprayer which has been proven to help prevent transmission of the Mottle Virus. I am done pulling plants out there. I'm just going to keep up with the aspirin and mineral oil every few weeks and watering with tea on the weekends and see what happens.
Here's a link to a post about aspirin and gardening. http://www.finegardening.com/how-to/qa/aspirin-cures-plant-headaches.aspx

The biggest bummer is I don't know if I should trust my pods/seeds to send anyone. If it turns out to be Mild Mottle Virus it can be seed borne and I would hate to wreck someone else's season with tainted seeds. We'll see. I am segregating the container plants and keeping my fingers crossed they stay healthy. If so I might be able to salvage some seeds for next year. Pepper Guru also suggested some test strips to positively ID the virus and which plants are infected, but the only ones I found are pretty pricey.

Nuff of the sad stuff...
P1010647.jpg

First Ripe Goat's Weed...

P1010649.jpg

First Ripe(ish) Fish x Chinense??? Cross. I probably would have had more of these ripe by now, but I keep pulling a few every time I BBQ. Unfortunately I believe this plant may have the Virus.

P1010650.jpg

Today's money shot...minus the Jamaican Hot Yellow that didn't make it to the photo op mmmmmmm...Its the one in the pic from yesterday. Hands down the HOTTEST annuum I have EVER eaten! Hopefully I can save some seeds off this one. Both plants look super healthy and are producing crazy #s of pods. I planned to send some seeds from this one on the train, but with the virus I decided to not chance it...didn't matter anyway because the seed count on that pod was ZERO! I really like this plant. I think its about the perfect pepper. Extremely prolific, very tasty and heat that rivals an orange hab. Very sweet with an undeniable annuum flavor to start and a good bit of chinense flavor to finish.

Say some prayers, cross some fingers and hold your breath...hopefully this thing will work itself out.

Shane

I am saying prayers and counting my blessing for your babies. Hopefully the aspirin will do the tick.

Nice harvest of cukes. Time to make some spicy pickles

You've still got lots to be thankful for... Plenty of hot stuff AND tomatoes and cukes! We'll keep our fingers and toes (and other various appendages) crossed for your sick babies and hope the aspirin does the trick. Cheers mate

Thanks guys! Greg (Pic1) suggested digging up all the suspect plants plus a couple on either side of them potting them up and moving them away...So instead of uprooting any more I will be doing a massive transplant this weekend. Some of the ones I suspect may be sick are only showing slight signs of the infection (if they have it at all???) and are still producing. Mottle virus is rarely a fatal virus, just slows production and stunts growth. Problem is, I won't be home to get anything done till Friday...stand by for operation moving day!

Those tomatoes look delicious. This is the first goat pepper that I think I have seen. I have seen the plants growing on the blog, but this is the first one I have seen pod up. Great growing. I know you will bounce back from the virus/bug issues. Your a trooper.

Thanks bro...I got home tonight but no time to do anything but water and snap a few pics...everything is still looking ok. Same ones suspect, but nothing looking any worse.

Hmmm spicy pickles. Never thought of that.
I need to make some pickles for sure!

I really do! Most of my plants are still happy and healthy...so I'm not gonna let it get me down!!!

I'm loving the tomatoes...nothing like vine ripened tomato and cucumber sandwiches. With spicy mayo of course!

Got home after a couple days away from the babies to find some good stuff!

P1010671.jpg

Here you go Sanarda another ripening Goat's Weed...hundreds on this plant. If you go back to the Tupac video the plant toward the end loaded with black pods was this plant.

P1010669.jpg

Devil's Tongue Brown getting all growed up and super gnarly!

P1010667.jpg

Another gnarly pod on the Infinity. Many nodes with 3+ pods set on them.

P1010666.jpg

First Brains of the season have set...maybe 6 total so far and all still real small.

P1010665.jpg

White Bhut!

P1010663.jpg

My Pequin Chiapas (cross) amazing plant! It stalled for a bit when I put it in the 5# but now its going off! Several hundred pods on this guy...couldn't even begin to count them all.

P1010662.jpg

My other (container) devils tongue plant putting some size on the pods.

P1010660.jpg

Chocolate Habanero...

P1010661.jpg

A closeup of a couple of Chocolate Hab pods...

and last but not least...
P1010659.jpg

First ripe Wild Brazil!!! Seed count 17 got my first taste of one of these babies!!! Another near perfect pepper!!! Very sweet with a nice heat...could eat a handful of these with dinner and only break out in a mild sweat! Other new pods include my Aji Amarillo and Bishop's Crown!!! Keep the prayers flowing that nothing else gets sick before I can execute the move this weekend! Also have to modify the drip system and install some timers this weekend to make it easier on the better half.

Thanks for checking in folks!
Shane
