Nopales.... nope.....what I was looking for is more of a seasoning/flavoring but also affects color......... but y'all will be craving what I'm going to make! The other thing I purchased was a little more $$$. And Scovie, I'm not talking about anything you'd get from that XXX shop just down the block!!! BTW, CJ and Scovie, part of my TD will be a tribute to Jamie.

hmmmmm.... could be! Or could be totally different... well, we'll see......... I picked up some basic supplies while over the hill today because I knew I wouldn't be back over there before the TD. Wally-world is 40 miles away over a 4020 ft elevation pass. Not like we can just "pop-in-on-the-way-home-from-work" . The mercado Coco's caters to Hispanic community and carry many specialty items you won't find at Supermarkets or Wally-World. AAAAAAaaannnnd...... they make fresh tortillas onsite.......MMMmmmmmm! Scovie, do you know what I'm making for Jamie?

Yes She DID! True Story- Jamie was a fiery red-headed Irish lady of about 49 when she passed. She lived out in the middle of the woods. She saved an abandoned fawn and raised it. Jamie had 2 dogs at the time and they adopted the fawn also. The fawn would walk right into her house, sometimes threatening to rip through the screen door, and nibble off her plate. In the summer, Jamie would sit out on the deck looking over the pasture (out in the middle of the woods which was her 40 acres) sipping a beer and eating Fritos. The deer (named Grace) would come up on her deck, lap beer out of her glass and nuzzle for Fritos. In the fall during hunting season, Jamie strapped a HunterOrange vest onto the deer and spray painted the deer orange as much as she could. After the second year, the deer had moved on and so had Jamie.

aw crap, I'm getting all sentimental and melancholy. I knew Jamie for way too short a time. SO! Getting back to the TD!!!! Cj, Scovie, can you guess what I'm making for Jamie?

Achiote? You know that is easy to find as it is also called annatto :P

I have a good guess in mind SL! Savory or Sweet? Either way.....total awesomeness!!!!!!

I'm so stoked to see what you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep! But it's not so readily available a Hank's Harvest Foods.

BOTH! and more! edit- and achiote was one of the 2 things on the shopping list today. In the interest of (semi-)full disclosure (and to eliminate 2 weeks of guessing  )the 2nd item is not a food item. And not really that interesting, but still relevant to the TD food. You'll See~~~~

try finding stuff like that here. online it is

Nopales, was my first idea/choice, but could only get poblanos in a can, and most places were out of stock

My JayTeeing revealed the achiote:annatto connection. At the store, I asked the clerk for achiote. She and another girl did a quick talk, walked down the isle and pointed to "annatto". Flip the box over = "achiote". SCORE! Mission accomplished- achiote found. Now, WTH do I do with it???? we shall see~

SL - I've tried the local options for "achiote".....you're much better off blending your own from ground annatto...

Your heading for a win my chica!!!!! :D

I too knew you were talking about achiote. They have it at a store here, but I don't think I will be needing it. Oh wait, maybe I might for one dish. I forget. Cool story about Jamie.

Yeah, achiote/annatto is NOT easy to get everywhere, including here. There is a specialty spice store (read: expensive) that carries it locally, but the grocers here don't. Oh yeah, you can get it in the Goya products, but then it includes a ton of MSG (first item on the ingredient list....!) So shy of ordering it online, when I go visit my daughter, I make a trip to Jungle Jim's for this and other products that are hard to find here.
