Ok guys...what IS the hottest chilli?
First we have our taste buds which enable us to taste:
Bitterness
Saltiness
Sourness
Sweetness
Umami (savoury)
These different types of taste enable us to sense the different tastes in different parts of our tongue and mouth, perhaps this is what is causing us to feel the heat also in different parts of our mouth/tongue.
We can all gradually build up our tolerance for hot spicy foods, namely chilli, but in addition, perhaps we also need to build up our tolerance to certain types of taste?
Some of us have more of a tolerance say toward sour tasting foods, i.e. lemons, perhaps our intolerance to certain tastes is what is causing us to feel the heat more in different types of chilli, in different positions of our tongue/mouth?...just a thought!!!

I think it has a lot to do with the different Capsainoid levels in different peppers reacting along with the Capsaicin

Certain types of tastes do help to build tolerance IMO.

I can handle the mouth heat of a naga better than the mouth heat of a goats weed.

Edit: I did't vote because, well really i aint qualified!

I'm sure that the heat tolerance is depending on quite a few factors. It can be different from day to day, from one emotion to the other.
The tolerance is higher when you expect something hot. Best example is a friend of mine who grabbed the wrong jar when he wanted to eat a spoonful of jam and expected something mild and sweet. He grabbed a jar of my habanero sauce instead and took a nice tsp. of it. He has a good heat tolerance but in that moment he was caught with the pants down.
If you know a pepper variety very well and like it you may tolerate mor SHU than with a pepper you don't like or never tasted before. Maybe we are somehow Pawlow-trained by the flavors we like or expect.

This is a poll that raises its head every 12 months or so....

7 pot......

JR, in the poll you put 'trinidad' in as one of the choices but there are a few chillis with 'trinidad' in the name. Most of us know that your talking about the scorpian but some might not....;)

P.S I reserve the right to change my vote as I am yet to try the scorpian....

Hottest I've grown is the Chocolate Habanero. Hottest I've tried are dried Bhut and Dorset Naga. Have not tried a 7 Pot (growing this year) or Scorpion (on my list to grow next year). I'll have some fresh Bhut, Bih and Dorset to try this year. And a 7 Pot and 7 Pot Jonah. Not to mention Fatalii. This is going to be a long, hot summer.

I can only attest to the Bhut as its the only one that I have tried thus far from the listed peppers. If 7 Pod is hotter, I'll soon be discovering it this summer.

Make sure you have the next day off of work. You will probably be up late after eating that.

Sorry Guys, don't know what I was thinking, was going to do a different thread on something else, but was reading the other at the same time and havin a few bourbons, probably a few too many by the looks
dont worry about it your fine. I really dont care but i guess some people do. And besides its easy to read a poll rather then read 100 posts

Aren't all those peppers listed in the poll variations of the same species/variety? Just some grown in India; some in the West Indies?

7pot 1,212,473
Naga Morich 1,296,787
Dorset Naga 1,293,115

I still haven't seen any info on whether the Trinidad Scorpion and 7-pot/pod have any C. frutescens genes like the Nagas. I think this would answer a few questions

With those kind of heat units does it even matter anymore? I would just grow them for the novelty or possibly even flavor.
