CaneDog 2019 Hirsute Pursuit – Rocotos, Wilds & Moar

So, here's the new glog for the coming season.  With the indoor grow culled pretty hard now I can focus more on getting ready for what's ahead.  Hoping for a great year, but I’m already a bit behind - the germinators are packed right now and I've still got a round of annuum seeds waiting for their turn.  I guess it wouldn’t feel much like pepper growing though if everything were going perfect.

My focus was going to be rocotos with a side of bonnets and some other stuff, but I found I kept planting more and more wilds. Eventually I just kinda went all-in with them and they took on co-main event status.

I’ll start things off with some pics of some of the earlier pube’s.  There’s not too many at this point. Unfortunately, the vast majority just went into germination.

First off, Costa Rica Red.  This is the CRR with flattened triangular pods.  I also have an OW CRR that’s a 3-4 lobed “boxy” variety.  I didn't get true seeds off this one last summer, so I have a few of these growing and crossing my fingers they grow true.

Rocoto DeSeda.  These guys were from a bush I’d OW’d a few years in a row, but it didn’t make it through this winter

Rocoto San Camillo

Gelbe Reisen Variant.  These are from true seeds off a plant I’ve been growing for a few years that was supposed to be Gelbe Riesen, but the pods are more orange vs yellow, rounder/less boxy, and just a touch smaller. I don’t know if it’s a natural variation or it might have crossed with a Costa Rica Orange, but it's a great plant. I have a few of these started and am curious what comes of them.

Giant Yellow Rocoto.  Suppose I should pinch that bud off.

Recently hatched Gelbe Riesen sprouts (the parent plant has been a beast for me for a while now) and CAP 217 Hyper-Pube.

That’s it for the rocotos for now.  Will try to post up some pics of the early wilds in a little bit.

A lot of awesomeness going on in here! Nice job on the surgery and those indoor B-goats still popping out some fresh pods for you!

Thanks man. Right back at you and your STC's Comeback glog.  Can't believe how your guys have exploded with growth.  My Giant Mini Yellow Brown and your Twilight Zone might share some ancestral gene it seems.  Hope those guys create enough room for pods.

Yet another reason for me to get excited about growing b'goats... I can only hope customs doesn't snag the seeds and I manage to do half as well as your gorgeous plants.

So many reasons to be.  Hope they get through an do well for you. Can't imagine the b goats doing anybody wrong.

Just found your glog (I think), as I no longer can keep up..LOL. the pubes look great! I wish they did well here, I grow them anyways ;)

Good luck this season!

It's been a while so maybe time for an update.  Lot's going on - pretty much everything on the list has germed now - but not a lot really note/picture worthy.

Really happy with how the rocotos have gone. Except two varieties I dropped within the past week, every variety I planted produced except the XL Brown, which I dropped my last few seeds of and hoping these'll pop.

For wilds, I'm just waiting on Blue Mystery, which have been down a while and are taking their sweet time and Chacoense (Putapario de Argentina) which I just dropped.

And in the others "category" it's just the Big Jims left.

All in all I'm super happy with how well germinations went and an appreciative shout out to those who contributed seeds to my season.

Pics of sprouts (most sprouts anyway) just aren't that interesting, but here's a couple rocotos that are a little older and doing well.

This beauty is a Cusco Rocoto and these were slow germinating. Nothing popped for 15 days and when they did the first couple weren't in great shape.  This one had some pretty aggressive fungal rot so I hit it with a slightly diluted H2O2 solution and, despite losing almost all of the cotyledons to the rot, the growth tip was saved and it appears it's going to be fine.  And of course, as soon as I saved it the remaining sprouts popped all healthy...

OK, and last of the pics planned for today, here's an update on the flush of USDA Flexuosum that appeared in mass many moons after the first 2 popped.  Kinda cool that 2 of them are tri-cots.

FlexForest5-1000.jpg

These guys have a nice structure and appearance to them once they get a little bit of size.
Flex1PI-1000.jpg

And the reason I bring these guys up is because my Purple Flexuosum did essentially the same thing.  The first 2 came up in fairly normal time, but then quite a bit later four more suddenly popped. What's interesting is that the seeds were in two different containers and were planted on different days yet this second round all popped at the same time.  This was also the second day of nice warm weather locally, so I had windows open and air circulating, etc.  Just makes me think more about which factors are affecting germination and how I might manipulate them to my advantage with tougher germinating seeds.  Anyhow, pic.

Seedling #3 is hard to see right under the farthest right cotyledon in the right pic with a partially removed HH and one seedling I replanted to another container.

So... Hyper Pube? This sounds like a 90's porno; maybe Gleaming the Cube but with nudity. I'm not necessarily disapproving, it's just that the 90's were a bit... bushy.

Really, though, some very interesting plants. Definitely appreciate being able to watch them grow. :)

Ha. I don't name these things I just try to grow 'em.  I think turbo pube was already taken when this one got named and what faster than turbo?  Hyper. :metal:

Forgot that I had a few pics I took of one of a Lanceolatum the other day that I could post.  This was going to be a cull pant and was left behind at pot up, but then it immediately responded to the slight with strong growth, branching, and now budding.  I figure it earned its keep, so it got the pot-up.

Like Lanceolatum quite a bit.  Long narrow leaves with a spikey pubescence, lots of irregular branching, and cool buds and flowers.

Beautiful pic, and pics overall! Thanks for sharing, these plants are looking amazing, well done! The hyper pube definitely induces a couple of laughs, but I'm guessing that was at least half the point [emoji38]

Alright, I tried to stay out of this glog, keep it right for the ladies and the decent folk, but this has gone far enough, young man.

You have a real nice growing endeavor going, Mr. Dog, you don't need to make up names and nomenclature to cover for your obvious...inexperience and biotannic immaturity...Surely, Lanceolatum? Everyone who's had a boil or a--ahem--swollen area, knows what that stuff is used for....

Alright, continue, but don't think you're fooling anyone with your brainy verbage!! :shame:
