Melissa77754 2012 Glog

Hey Everyone
icon_smile.gif

So I figured it is about time I start a Grow log of my own and I will do my very best to keep it up to date. With two kiddos and a massive amount of plants my days can be pretty hectic. I grew jalapenos and serranos last season, had a decent harvest considering the small pot size I used. In July I met a nice lady giving away hot pepper seeds to newbies on GW, decided to give them a try, August met Smokemaster through a generous SASBE offer and the rest is history!! lol

I started a batch in late August so I have some "overwinters" if you will, living in SoCal I can grow year round with the right protection from time to time. I started out with a cheap 12'x7' hoop house and when the winds thrashed that I bought two 6x8 with shelving, still the cheaper plastic hot house type but the shelving makes it heavy and the winds don't phase it. I also have a 6x6 indoor tent with a 4 bulb T5 and 2 monster size CFL's. The growth indoors versus out does not even compare, T5's are amazing! Have to thank my bro for giving me that fixture.

I am hoping I didn't bite off more than I can chew being it's my first real season growing super hots mainly. I plan to sell some plants along the way to help fund my pepper growing addiction

My log will be pretty picture heavy which I am sure most will not mind! Enjoy and happy pepper growing to everyone!!

I don't think I am capable of ever turning down a pod or seeds...I've tried and failed several times. lol

I had a few seedlings that started out with a little tan like your Aji Joe plant...most of mine were chocolate/brown varieties. Devils tongue brown and Chocolate Bhuts are two I remember off the top of my head.

I don't think I can turn down seeds or pods anymore either. I have been saving all my market orange hab seeds and the yellow/orange manzano's I can get on occasion at the mexican market. As if I don't have enough seeds already! lol

I bet that plant is some sort of choc/brown or purple variety. Will be interesting to see how it progresses.

Thanks Spicergeist! Actually funny you mention that variety, it is one I want to grow. Crossing my fingers that seeds for pimenta de neyde is on the seed train I should be getting in a week or so!! :)

I had seed, but originally wasn't going to grow it. I decided last minute to give it a go, I now have 5 seedlings. I'm going to make a couple of crosses with this variety this year too - I'll make my own Bhut or Naga Morich cross. I'm also very curious about the taste, it seems either there are a few strains going around with some that taste good and some that don't, people's taste buds are really different or a combination...

Definitely booming in your neighborhood, Melissa! The
plants - indoor and outdoor - look really good and I can't
wait to see how they look in a couple of months. Good
luck to you the rest of the season.

Thank you Paul, best of luck to you this season as well! Your clone and grafting projects are amazing. I want to try cloning some time this season, will be checking back on your log once I am ready to give it a go! :)

Wow, I can't believe I missed this one! You sure have a great list there. I know exactly how it feels to want to grow everything your first season, cuz I am in the same boat....

Everything looks super healthy and I cant wait to see more great photos. I am definitely following this one, keep em comin!

Thanks for stopping by MGOLD86!! I am due to receive one of the seeds trains in the next couple days, almost afraid to open the box because I know my grow list will end up expanding!! lol. Good luck with your season as well, go big or go home right? :)

Holy crap!!! That is indeed a helluva list! You're hard-core! You're in a much warmer climate than I am here(bay area) and that's gonna make a big difference. I grew up in West Covina and my pepper plants did kick-ass down there. Congrats! You're on the right track!

I actually grew up in Covina and my parents still live in the same house! Went to South Hills High! Good luck with your grow this season!

Hey Melissa,
Just as a follow up I did get the kids out to plant the herbs, take a look in my glog for pics, and they loved every minute of it. They dug their own hole added some garden soil, placed the plant in the hole and placed dirt around them. AND, they loved every minute of it. So much so that I picked up some veggie seeds for them to start a veggie garden. I highly recommend that you try eith your 5 year old, she'll love it and you'll get some really quality time with her.

Just had to share,
RM

That is great RM!! I actually bought my 4 yr old a pumpkin kit, we started three giant pumpkin seeds together and she loved it! Ground is all ready for planting, in a couple weeks I will definitely get her involved. :)

Nice list Melissa-
The purples look about right, the bigger they grow the less purple they get, but the peppers are REAL purple til they turn-cool plant.I have 2 over wintered, and afew newbies started.
The rest of the gang is looking pretty robust as well...

I saw your list... ;)!
I will just come out say I am an avowed 7-potvert.Incurable.(shrug,yes,its true :scared: )
Soooo,oooooo....did I really see a 7pot Jonah x butch T cross, or was I just dreaming that?
I saw a few other intesting ones....if you had a few avail for trade, most of my list is avail for trade,
please take a peek see if you see anything that you MIGHT not have.......
Have a good one-

***UPDATE TIME***

Been hard at work the last week, sunday I picked up two yards of organic planter mix to add to my horrible clay dirt! $22/yard, steal of a deal! Actually bought 1 1/2 yards for the ground and 1/2 yard of his potting mix. Mixed up some with 50% pro-mix and so far everything I have transplanted in to the mix love it! I am positive I found my source for cheap GOOD potting soil, $25/yard for that and well worth it!! My $120 electric tiller investment I made last year was well worth it, that thing is a champ and handled my clay like nothing!

This is my front planter, last year the hubby said I couldn't plant edibles in it, this year he is all for a pepper forest in our front yard! Lol. Added about 5 barrels of the planter mix, 1/2 large bag of pumice and here it is ready for plants! :) I had to cover it with weed block and rocks to keep the stupid neighborhood cats out, they think it's their litter box!!

Now this is my money maker planting bed :D At least 15 feet wide and 25 feet long? Going to have to measure it one day. I added a ton of bags of manure and amendments before and tilled it in. Now with the last load of planter mix I bought and 3 large bags of pumice tilled in and this bad boy is ready to go!! Going to grow some huge pepper trees in here! My tiller and all the amendments turned this soil in to GOLD!! I had to fence it off from my shih-tzu, he thought it was his playground! lol. Only took 2 25ft rolls of plastic fencing at $10/ea to fence it in. The bamboo sticks were 6 for $2.

Hey DJ!

Thanks for stopping by my grow log! :) You were dreaming on that cross, but you may have mistaken it for the Doughlah x Butch T? I will have to look back and see where I got these seeds from, I started 12 plants of this one! Overkill much?? lol. I have some extra seeds I think, they are yours if you want them. Have more seeds than I know what to do with right now! Send me a PM for my addy if you want them.

Best of luck to you this season :D

That's a lot of plants and they're looking great! Are you growing them all in pots?

Hi HotStuff!

Actually everything is in pots for now, but in a couple weeks stuff will start moving to the ground. :)

looking great :)

I bet it was tempting not to try to grow 1 of each from the seed train haha!

Very tempting, but I have to admit. Alot of the stuff in there I already had, so hoping the other train I am about to receive has more odd balls that may interest me. :) But rest assured, there will be another round of seed starting! lol

Ready to be potted up :)
