JCW's 2015 Glog

Well, here's to another year. I wanted to downsize from last year, and ended up practically doubling everything.  Started germinating on Jan 22 using paper towel method.  Tried 2 ways, one in cups with the seeds on top, other the way I have always done with the seeds in paper towel in ziploc.  Both have worked, but the paper towel in ziploc seems faster, maybe better temp control there.  So far have about 55 seeds in dirt after 11 days with many of them already popped up and looking happy.

Almost an embarrassing setup compared to many I see on here, but it worked great 10 years ago, and still worked fine last year so I figure no need to change yet.

Will need another rack of lights this year for the increase in volume I have.

Grow list as of today (updated 3/17 hopefully for the last time).  I tried to keep track of the sources, so hopefully I have given proper credit here.

Thanks.  The first two up there are thanks to you.  That 7 Pot caramel has my attention, looks really good.  Really looking forward to those yellow ones also.  Hadn't been able to fight my way back to that corner of the garden in a while and made it tonight and found those 2 just waiting to be picked.

Absolutely beautiful! Great color on the chocolate BBG7! How are the heat & flavor on the BOC x Orange Primo? I love the shape on those.

Yeah, those choc bbg7 are really good.  Probably my favorite chocolate superhot I have had so far.   Didn't have the bitter taste a lot of them have.  The BOC x Orange Primo taste kinda like caribbean red or some type of habanero to me.  It wasn't superhot at all.  The first few pods I had were also shaped like habs, now I have these and there's a third shape of pods on the plant that have some stingers like a primo or scorpion.  I wouldn't expect them to taste any different than the early pods but have yet to try any of this shape one yet.

Great plants and great looking pods... shapes om the daisy cutter seem t9 be on point. Judging by the color those are red DC...they are yummy peppers. I've had the yellow and orange..the red. I can't recall... keep it up

Awesome pods Justin ... great cross section of varieties .... what has impressed you and what has disappointed you in heat and flavour so far
Thanks John,
Biggest disappointments so far are some pods are are lacking heat and some that seem to be lacking color.  First off the Trinidad Morovas which I believe from reading should be habanero level heat at least has none.   I know some people like the non hot chinense peppers, but theres just something I can get my head wrapped around with that flavor without the heat to go with it.  So thats my biggest dud by far I think.  The orange primo that looks good by the shape but has turned out more yellow is also  extremely mild.  Flavor is pretty good, just wish it was orange and had at least half of red primo heat which was my hopes for this one.  Something that tasted like red primo with just a bit less bite to it.  It can be much more than 100,00 scoville.  Maybe I am just not patient enough, which happens early on with me, but a lot of my orange peppers seem to be ripening more yellow.  Except BOC which went the otherway and is probably closer to red.  Maybe I got crosses, maye its the 2 feet of rain in a month and a half.  Oh well, I still have probably 100 varities yet to ripen or so.

3 favorites so far are Chocolate BBG7 - nice heat without the overpowering sometimes bitterness that can come with the chocolate superhots.  Very smooth.  Looking to make a smoked powder if I get enough.
Yellow Brain Strain - not new but doing good again - this year they seem even more pungent than last, not hotter just stronger in flavor.  Took a bit to get used to, have the first batch on the dehydrator now for a new stock of yellow dust.
Billy Goat - its not really too hot but the flavor is good and love the pod shape.  Its a little small but also solid as a rock, so nice and crunchy and easy to cut and deseed.  Hoping these will make a nice mild smoked powder for pizza - ran out of my antillais caribbean and bonda ma jacques powder from last year a while back which I was using for this.

Looking splendid Justin . Really digging that jigsaw pod. Keep em coming !!!
Thanks Jamie.  Got a few more of those coming this week, expecting they will probably be over the top of my heat scale, but anxious to see what flavor they have.  I hope they are a smooth heat.   For me the red superhots fall into 2 categories, the smooth heat like reapers and jonahs where the heat is strong but slow building with a good taste or like the sr strain and 7 pot long were last year.   Those hit me right up from with the blast of heat and strong chinense / bitter / capsaicin taste, not even sure what you call it but probably know what I mean.  I usually refer to it as the red taste.  Seems red ones have their unique blast sometimes just like some of the harsh chocolate ones do.

I didn't know there was orange, but think that's one I would like.  These are supposed to be yellow.  I hope they are yellow.  Should know soon enough.

One of my favorite things to do with the pods is make powders.  I add them to almost everything.  Since no one else in the house can handle any heat in their food, I rarely cook hot food but add my own spice after.

I told someone a while back about my sub $10 cold smoker.  Here it is.

18 gallon storage tote - free I have many extra
Wire rack $3
solder iron $4
aluminum trays for the pods $2
old 28 oz food can with holes in base and lid
ceramic tile to put the can on to keep it from melting the tote

I fill 2 of the trays heaing with pods and set them on top of each other, offset so they are not directly over the can.  It does put out some heat directly over the can but not enough to significantly warm up the entire tote.  The can filled with chips provides 1.5 to 2 hours of smoke.  That was what I smoked most of mine for last year.  Last few batches I decided to try 4 hours by refilling the can and starting again.  Was worried as some people said too much would be badness, but I think it was even better.

Here's first 3 batches dehydrating.  They are just plain so far.

Yellow Brain Strains - I won't ever smoke these again, its too damn good plain.

How's the beni highlands taste? They are nice looking pods. Same with the carolina yellow
Beni Highlands weren't too bad.  Fairly mild.  Had some sliced lengthwise on a burger the other night.  Carolina Yellow is still on the backlog of stuff I need to try.  Hopefully this week.  Going to process a bunch tomorrow for the smoker and some powdering.

Thanks.  Its becoming overwhelming really quick.  I spent 2 hours crawling around that damn jungle today.  I got my wish, my plants are smaller than last years, at least for now.   Now all the damn pods are practically on the ground.  I can't even see a lot of them without crawling or pulling branches up.  Getting tired of accidentally breaking branches off.

Looks like your garden is rewarding you well. Thanks for sharing the smoker. That's bad a$$.
Thanks.  Way past my bedtime, but was determined to smoke some peppers today and one delay after another, didn't get started until way late.  It works well for what I have into it.  Need to check every now and then, it likes to quit smoking and need to stir the chips a bit which is a pain.   I figure in about 3 weeks I will be so overwhelmed with pods I won't know what to do.   Still waiting on about half the varieties to ripen the first one.
