NoVa's Grow Log

This is from my blog (link is in signature):

Finally! Seeds in dirt! Wooohooo! 144 peat pucks have been filled with 13 different varieties from 7 different sources, for a total of 18 different types to track (5 varieties are being planted from two sources). They were just sown, so the temps aren't back up to where they need to be yet.

Yeah, I'm a bit concerned that I've bitten off more than I can chew, but will seek some time saving alternatives after they go outside. For example, I'm going to use a drip hose to water them, and put it on a timer to do it in the morning. In order to help control aphids and other pests, I'm going to be buying ladybugs and other assorted friendly predators. I also have my wife to help me, as she's home during the day.

Looking forward to seeing the pods come in!

I've never had any problem with aphids once plants are outside. Aphids only show up on my indoor plants that are overwintered. I keep my new seedlings away from my OW plants. You'll have some serious quantities of pods coming. Get ready! Get a dehydrator. ;-)

Nova you're on a growing streak for sure! I'm going to have to check out this rhyzo... rhzot... new stuff you're using.

...and he has BillyBoy Douglah plants to boot patrick. The foliar spray rhizotonic is sure making those plants very happy, great job for a first timer Mike! Thanks for the trade. Will be very excited to see you grow the Brain Strain with the same precision.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I have to credit this site for my success to date. If hadn't stumbled on this place, I'd be growing jalapenos, jolokias, and red habs this year, and they wouldn't be anywhere near the size of what I've got going so far. The great growers on this site have shared growing tips, seeds, and years of wisdom that have allowed this newbie to at least get a good start on the season!

I agree Nova, this site is great, everyone here has inspired me so much and I am going a bit crazy here. I have 11 fluorescent lights between 3 areas and tons of plants, thinking about seeing if I can find neighbors who are willing to let me plant on their properties. LOL I have a storage building in another town and own the vacant lot next to it as well (the lot is approx 90'x120'), but people there are turds, I dont think i could trust my garden to survive, but one super hot pepper would probably teach them. Plus that town floods atleast once a year.

I may need to cut back on some of the supplements I'm giving these plants. I didn't take any photos tonight, but they are growing very rapidly. While I'm happy they're growing good, I'm concerned about them outgrowing my grow box before I get past the potential frost period. The grow box is 36 inches tall, less space for the pot and lights to hang, so I figure they can get to be a max of 24 inches tall (next pot up is a one gallon that is 6 inches tall). Right now, the biggest plants are 6 inches tall, and I've got about 5 weeks to plant out. The problem is that the oldest plants are really about 5-6 weeks old, so they're at their halfway point to going outdoors.

I guess this is a good problem to have, but I'm going to have to think about where the plants are going to be next month...

(Posted this in the Trinidad Scorpion Appreciation thread...)

Here's my nicest Trinidad Scorpion, its doing pretty well, and is about 5 weeks old.

You must have those plants on steroids. They look fantastic, especially considering this is your first time from seeds. My first year I made nearly every mistake in the book and was lucky to plant anything out, and what did go out looked just plain sick. Then I found the internet and it has helped a lot.

Whatcha gonna do with that Redwood sapling you have growing in your house when it gets too big? Oh wait....that's a Trinidad Scorpion pepper plant? All of your plants are looking way buff Nova HH way to grow!

You're right on the money when you say the people around here are great. They give freely of their time and their knowledge. It's made a huge difference in my pepper growing life.

Absolutely agree. No way would I have been able to do what I've done so far this season without guidance from people on this site. My success is their success.

I just hope the good luck continues into the fruiting season!

Yeah this is THE BEST forum for peppers. I tried some other gardening forums, but they might get a responce once or twice a week. Nova, what are you doing to make them so tall??? All my plants are mostly short and squatty, but they are pretty bushy, I dont get it. LOL Your plants are looking great though...

Matt mine are the same, short and bushy. I raised the lights a few inches and now they're starting to stretch out a bit.
