Student Documentary on Hot Peppers

Hello Everybody,

My name is Robin and I'm new to this forum. I'm a film student who is looking to do a short documentary on the Scoville Scale, why people love to eat hot peppers, the physical and psychological effects of eating spicy food, etc.

I live in Massachusetts, and since we are poor college students :-), we do not have the resources to travel very far for this project. Therefore, we are looking for someone that would like to be interviewed for this project, who also lives in the New England area. I thought this website would be a good resource to try and find such a person(s).

Most likely, we would only need a few hours of your time (like an afternoon?). We would need to know your comfort level in front of cameras, and we would need a photo, as well. Someone who is not shy, forthcoming, honest, and personable is obviously what we're looking for. We would be shooting in either late September, but most likely sometime in early October--depending on your schedule, of course. If you are interested in being a part of this documentary (or know someone who would be!), please e-mail me at: shutterbirdrobin@yahoo.com.

Thank you very much!

Welcome!

Oh man Passow (above) would be perfect. Send him a plane ticket you won't be sorry :D

Welcome from Fort Worth...and THP is correct on the Passow thingy (IGG)...there are several members from your neck of the woods in the next state south...

Oh, if only I had the money to send you a plane ticket!! I wish...
I've heard about one member that lives in R.I. Still waiting to hear back, though...

I'll be in Newport, RI for a little over 3 weeks starting Sept. 19th. During that time I'll be busy during typical working hours on weekdays...other than that I'm fairly free to roam about.

Sounds like a neat little Project you ought to do a thread on here to you will get lots of help im sure ;)

xgrafcorex, we should talk. I'm interested in your philosophy on this whole topic, what are the hottest peppers you eat, how often do you eat extremely spicy foods, etc.
For anybody that participates, they'd get a copy of the DVD. Besides that, I'm assuming a member of our group would probably put it on his YouTube page. It probably wouldn't be posted until sometime in November, though.

And I meant to add:
I've heard that there are some clubs that actually meet on occasion to indulge in various recipes, talk about peppers, socialize, etc. If any of you know of a resource where I could find out about such groups that actually meet face-to-face, I'd love to hear about it! Thank You!

i would like to but im still a noob and only 15/doubt my parents would allow going to a complete strangers place and doing a documentry lol.

ShutterBird...how much research have you done on the Scoville Scale ?

Reason I asked, is most people know the number and the higher it is the hotter the pepper/sauce/whatever...but most don't know exactly what it means and the history behind it...I assume since you are doing a documentary, there will be a explanation of the scale and maybe even an example of the dilution process...today, they use Liquid Chromatography to measure the heat of samples, while the original Scoville Scale was based on diluting the sample and having a group of people doing the tasting to determine if they could taste heat after each dilution step...

ide really like to do it but i cant see it happening. ide like to see more kids my age into growing things besides weed. something addictive and legal...chillis!

Hi Alabama Jack,
I've done some research on the Scoville Scale and understand some of the history of it, but from your post, it looks like I'm missing some things and need to do more work. I thought it was still a subjective process with heatness being judged by people. Thanks for setting me straight. If you know of a good resource/website that explains the process better, I'd love to hear about it.

Course, the tricky thing about this documentary is including the data about the Scoville Scale, the biochemical effects on peppers and their medical benefits (which we are discovering are enormous!), but doing so in a way that's still visually entertaining and not too dry.

But your question brings up another important question, too. I will be interviewing some of your fellow THP members on October 5th. For those of you that live far away, I was wondering if you could give some input on what YOU, as people that enjoy hot peppers, would like to see in a documentary about YOU. What questions would you want covered? What do you want people to know (the ones that know NOTHING about this--of which there are many!) about this indulgence, hobby, subculture, or whatever you want to call it.

Thanks!
