CMPMAN1974's 2011 Growing Log - Started 1/29/11

Well, I finally got motivated and dropped some seeds in my 162 count plug tray this afternoon. Filled up 100 of the spaces. It's always so hard to narrow anything down. I've got the seed tray on a heating mat calibrated to 86 degrees. Sowing so many individual varieties is always one huge chore. I kind of envy people like AJ planting 100 of the same variety.

I sowed a lot of C. chinenses, some wild bird types, and wild praetermissums and a few other wild species. There is nothing very common on this years' list. lol. :) Tons of strange super hot cross attempts from people. At least I've got a solid system now as far as spreadsheets and tracking.

I wish I had acres to grow all I want. I could really get carried away!

I'll start the Annuums and Baccatums in early March. I'm cutting way, way back on Rocotos. I struggled last year to get them to produce (well ripen) on time. I'm not a quitter by any means though. :)

I will be pretty much growing 100% in the ground this season. I don't feel like spending money on soil this year. I built three more 4' x 12' raised beds last Fall to add some growing space. I should be fine.

Another absolute scorcher!

<3 Everyday I check THP several times, mainly in anticipation of your daily pod posts Chris. Thanks, and keep up the great work.

The orange mystery fruit from Brito seems to have a similar morphology to the white bullets/small white habs. What does *that* one taste like. It's very cool looking.

No, they are a weird cross called Yaki-Blue Chocolate Naga Shape..plant has purplish/green leaves. It's crazy productive. I grow it last year, but the pods ripened red. Last year it produced a boatload of pods off one plant. It has become one of my favorites. Initially I was told it was a cross of a Naga x Filius Blue. :)

Chris

Red last year and now brown? Are they open pollinated?

Nice brown pods overall. I've just turned all of my peppers that haven't been made into pickles or sauce into powder and could use some more brown varieties next year. This year was Choco Bhuts and Choco Habs.

Nate, I tasted Comstock Purple. Not bad flavor..low to medium heat. The fact the stems are purple even is damn cool. lol.

Eephus Man, I tasted those mystery pods from Brazil...they are 2x the size of white/gold bullet habs. They have a very nice flavor and are extremely uniform. As far as heat, I'd go 6 of 10 maybe.

Spicegesit, I have NO idea what the status is on those Yaki-Blue red/chocolate/rainbow pods. LMAO. They were given to me by another person. All I know is I like the plant look, how productive it is, etc. It's obvuously far from stable! The pods are amazingly uniform though on the plant. :)

Few more from today:

It came out true PepperLover!!!! I grew a few plants and one produced giant yellow pods, not green. This one came through like a champ. I swear the heat level tripled from 2010. :) VERY hot, but still compared to the last thing I put in my mouth....stay tuned.

I'm not sure I'm ready to ever touch this one again. It put a world of hurt on me. I'm still shaking a little after eating a sliver. My stomach hurts bad. I must find a way to overwinter this one. It's some freak cross that kicks the crap out of you. Imagine pods that have more wrinkling than 7 Pot Brain Strain and grow barbs on the outside inverted. It's the kind of pod you think about eating and say am I sure? Inedible.

I will have to try to germinate my seeds again next year. I got zero out of 8 first time I tried. I will use the cup method so I can see what's going on. What was the flavor like? First time around I thought they tasted like green apples.

Beaglestorm, I actually enjoyed the flavor of that 7 Pot Everygreen a lot. You described it well. I was surprised how the heat snuck up this year and just kept going. A L O N G burn. It would make an excellent powder/hot sauce.

I'm wondering if Pepperlover.com will sell it this season. I know she wanted to hold off on seed distribution until ready as it was her baby. :) I e-mailed her to let her know if turned out. I'm looking forward to hearing back.

There's a very fine line between mature / immature seeds with this one I believe. It gets tricky with these green pods. I got lucky and a few sprouted.
